Indo-Pacific Alliance Against AMR
In 2022, world-wide data documenting and quantifying the problem of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) was published in The Lancet. It declared AMR as one of the top global public health threats and shows the Indo-Pacific Region, as a whole, is one of the two worst affected places, levelling with Africa to contribute most of the mortality in the 5 million people who died with AMR infections in 2019. The research also showed that AMR death rates were highest in some LMICs, making AMR not only a major health problem globally but a particularly serious problem for some of the poorest countries in the world.
These statistics are worse than anticipated, which means the previously estimated figure of 10 million deaths per year in 2050 - likely a gross underestimate of the scale of the problem. Negative impacts of AMR are also likely to be impacted by climate change as the severity and incidences of major climate events increase the incident of disease.
We have built a coalition across the Indo-Pacific region charged with meeting the challenges posed by AMR, and opening access to 21st century technology and expertise. This Indo-Pacific Alliance Against AMR has now established a framework for broad and deep long-term partnerships right across our region. We will now strive to quash the evolution of AMR and deliver community health outcomes, regional health security, health systems strengthening, and human development outcomes as a result.
