Minors in the single Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) course
A minor is an optional part of your engineering single degree. It comprises four units studied over two years and is listed on your transcript.
From 2022, if you are enrolled in the single degree BE(Hons), you can complete an engineering minor in a discipline distinct from your engineering specialisation. Note that the engineering minors are not available in the biomedical engineering and software engineering specialisations and the engineering double-degree courses.
Engineering minors
An engineering minor takes the place of your specialisation technical electives. There are some limits on the combination of specialisation and minor that you can take. You can select an engineering minor in WES in the Area of Study section (the same area for your specialisation). You cannot take an engineering minor if you are enrolled in the master’s accelerated program and you plan to accelerate the master’s degree.
STUDENTS WHO COMMENCED PRIOR TO 2022
If you commenced the single degree BE(Hons) prior to 2022, you can take:
- A non-engineering minor from Arts, Business, Information Technology or Science (Not available in the biomedical engineering specialisation and the engineering double-degree courses).
and/or
- An engineering minor in a discipline distinct from your engineering specialisation. (Not available in the biomedical engineering and software engineering specialisations and the engineering double-degree courses.
Non-engineering minor
A non-engineering minor takes the place of your free electives if you have them to complete in Year 1 and 2. This is only possible if you are not required to complete any foundation unit and therefore you have four free electives available. You must complete the prescribed units in the non-engineering minor. They are generally level 1 and 2 units, although there may be units at level 3 required in the minor.
It will not be possible to undertake a non-engineering minor if you have to complete at least one engineering foundation unit.
* The computer science minor is not available to students in the software engineering specialisation due to overlap with core software engineering units.
** Engineering students cannot count ENG1003 towards the Mobile apps development minor as this is a core level one unit for engineering.
*** The software engineering minor is not available to students in the software engineering specialisation due to overlap with core software engineering units.
