Global Summer Programs
A Global Summer Program allows you to study overseas during the Australian summer break while earning credit towards your Monash degree. Programs typically run for two to eight weeks and are offered by approved partner institutions around the world.
Global Summer Programs provide an opportunity to experience a different academic environment, develop intercultural skills and explore another country while progressing your degree.

Participation is available through one of two modes:
Exchange
- You remain enrolled at Monash and continue paying your tuition fees to Monash.
- You pay any applicable accommodation, travel and living costs, and any additional program fees as required by the host institution.
Independent Study Abroad (ISA)
- You pay the host institution directly for tuition and any associated program fees.
- You will be enrolled at Monash in a placeholder Study Abroad unit, which records the overseas study on your transcript without attracting Monash tuition fees.
Before applying, you should ensure you meet the following eligibility requirements:
- have completed at least 48 credit points by the end of the semester in which you apply
- have a minimum WAM of 60 (unless a higher requirement is specified by the host institution or your faculty)
- meet any additional faculty, school or host institution requirements
- are eligible to receive credit towards your Monash degree
- have checked that your chosen program does not conflict with your Monash teaching or examination commitments*.
* Participation in a Global Summer Program is not considered grounds for deferred or rescheduled examinations. Students are responsible for ensuring they are available for all required exams.
Important: Do not apply directly to a host institution unless you have been instructed to do so by Monash Abroad as part of the application process.

Do not apply directly to a partner institution until after you have been approved by Monash Abroad and your faculty (see 'How to Apply' tab).
You may also be interested in an ACICIS Short Term Program. Global Winter Programs options will be available from Semester 1, 2027.
Important Note:The Monash Abroad Travel Grant (if participating in a program that is listed in the 'Exchange Programs' table only) and OS-HELP loan (if applicable) will be paid approximately 4 weeks prior to program commencement and only when all requirements are completed by you. Therefore, these funds should not be considered as your primary source of funding to pay program related deposits and balances.
Monash Abroad Travel Grant
Any student participating in a program that is listed on the 'Exchange Programs' table will be eligible to receive the Monash Abroad Travel Grant if they meet all other eligibility criteria. You do not need to apply separately for this grant as your eligibility for this grant will be assessed as part of your application.
OS-HELP loan
OS-HELP is a Commonwealth Government loan program. It provides financial assistance to eligible Commonwealth Supported Place students to study part of their course overseas.
If you are eligible for the loan and wish to apply, you MUST submit your application as per the relevant OS-HELP loan term deadline, even if you have not submitted an application OR been accepted into your overseas program by that deadline.

Managing your Safety
Ensuring your health and safety while overseas is a shared responsibility between Monash and you, the traveller.
Monash is committed to ensuring that our programs are COVID-safe by adhering to local regulations and developing COVID-safe plans. Before completing this part of the application for this program, you should be familiar with how we will manage the risk of COVID-19 disruptions and support your safety.
Staff and participants must familiarise themselves with Monash's COVID Safe Plan and the strategies to protect themselves and each other:
- Come to campus/activities well - Only attend activities if you are well. You may be directed to take a COVID-19 test if you are unwell and be required to isolate until you have recovered.
- Physical distancing - Adhere to local physical distancing rules.
- Masks - Wear masks when required and/or when physical distancing cannot be achieved.
- Personal hygiene - Hand washing and hand sanitizer to be made available and used regularly.
- Increased cleaning - We will work with providers to ensure cleaning standards are high among our providers.
- Well ventilated spaces - Windows and doors will be open during group activities (where possible).
- Positive case management - If you are unwell, you will be supported to obtain a COVID-19 test and a staff member will ensure you have access to support.
Important note: you may be required to take a COVID-19 test before travelling internationally by the airline or government of destination country/ies. If you test positive, you may not be able to travel as planned, which could delay your arrival at your destination. If this occurs in the host location our staff and partners will support you until you recover and are able to travel.

Monash Support
This program has been designed in adherence to the University’s policies and procedures pertaining to risk management, travel and student mobility. The program leaders have been trained to mitigate risks and respond appropriately in an emergency. The program managers have selected travel services and partners according to their ability to deliver safe and quality services.
While on this program you will be covered by the Monash student travel insurance which includes access to Global 24 emergency assistance (+61 2 9312 5191). Other emergency contact details are available via Monash Abroad.
Your Responsibilities
You are responsible for managing your safety and wellbeing by completing all programmatic requirements and taking action on advice provided.
Below is a list (not exhaustive) of pre-departure tasks that we recommend you complete:
- Subscribe to travel alerts for your destination country/ies via the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Smartraveller website.
- Review the Travel health, safety and security advice on the Monash Abroad website.
- Visit your doctor to discuss your travel plans and ensure you can effectively manage your health while you are away.
- Apply for or renew your passport (you must have at least 6 months validity after your travel end date on your passport).
IMPORTANT - Do not pay any deposits (where relevant), or organise flights until you have received Monash Abroad approval. Monash Abroad will not be held responsible for any costs incurred as a result of an unsuccessful application.
Prior to signing up to any program, please complete a ‘Course Advice Request’ to ensure you have room in your course map.
How to Apply
Applying for a Global Summer Program involves four stages:
- Submit your Monash Abroad application.
- Obtain faculty approval via a Study Plan form submission.
- Apply to the host institution (when instructed to by Monash Abroad).
- Accept your offer and complete your pre-departure requirements.
Step 1 – Submit your application
Complete the Global Summer Program application form before the published application deadline. During the application, you will nominate your preferred program and provide the information required to assess your eligibility.
Applications will open shortly.
Step 2 – Obtain faculty approval
Complete and submit a Study Plan so your faculty or school can assess your proposed overseas study for credit towards your Monash degree.
Your application cannot be assessed until both your Monash Abroad application and your Summer Study Plan have been submitted.
Step 3 – Apply to the host institution when instructed to by Monash Abroad
If completing an ‘Exchange’ program, Monash Abroad will nominate you directly to the partner institution.
If completing a ‘Study Abroad’ program, you will be invited by Monash Abroad to submit an application directly to the host institution.
Monash Abroad will provide you with more information when you are ready for this step.
Do not apply directly to a host institution until you have been instructed to do so by Monash Abroad.
Step 4 – Accept your offer and prepare to travel
If you receive an offer from the host institution, carefully review the details and accept the offer by the deadline provided. You will also need to share evidence of your acceptance with Monash Abroad.
Once your place has been confirmed, Monash Abroad will guide you through the remaining pre-departure requirements, including:
- Completing additional forms (e.g. passport and medical details, travel approval form)
- completing mandatory pre-departure preparation (e.g. an online module and attending a briefing)
- activating your Monash travel insurance.
Your Global Summer Program approval is only final once all required pre-departure requirements have been completed and your travel has been approved by Monash Abroad. This is the point at which Monash Abroad will request your Faculty to enrol you into the applicable unit.
A note on tuition fees
If completing a Study Abroad program, you are responsible for paying the tuition fee directly to the host institution. As you will be enrolled into a Study Abroad program, enrolment at Monash will be in a placeholder unit only; there will be no fees charged for this program at Monash. The tuition fee paid to the host institution cannot be deferred via FEE-HELP.
Students participating in an Exchange program will be enrolled in an exchange placeholder unit, which does charge you the standard Monash unit fee, and you pay that as you would normally. There will be no tuition fees charged by the host institution, but there may be other fees, such as program fees for things like excursions. These are paid to the host institution.
Exchange Programs (EXC)
Programs offered at Host Institutions where Monash has an exchange agreement in place. No additional tuition fees payable to the host unless noted otherwise.
