John qualified as a Radiographer in Ireland in 2000. He has worked in private and public practice both in Ireland and Australia as a Radiographer, having trained in CT and MRI. He continues to maintain a clinical role as a radiographer at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and in private practice.
He was a clinical tutor for 2 years in Ireland where he became firmly dedicated to education. He now lectures into the BMedRad(Hons) program at Monash, especially into first and second year units. He is involved in all aspects of education from lectures, tutorials, skills demonstration, course design and student mentoring.
John has been actively involved in Digital Health at Monash University, being part of the working group that created the first Digital Health curriculum at an Australian University. He continues to be an active member of the Alliance for Digital health at Monash (ADAM).
John has been heavily involved in the introduction of PebblePad, winning a Dean's award for excellence in teaching in 2019. PebblePad is an online ePortfolio platform, transforming students’ clinical portfolios to a flexible online environment. He has also created more contemporary resources, harnessing the power of online learning to enhance the effectiveness of student clinical placements. Of note he has advocated for the use of ePortfolios in an effort to help prepare students for professional life following University.
He has successfully supervised fourth year student literature reviews on various topics from ePortfolio development to virtual reality learning.
John is an active researcher especially interested in the area of critical thinking, professionalism, patient centeredness and ethical practice. He is currently a PhD candidate investigating the impact that statutory regulation has on clinical practice. John was involved in a Teaching and Learning funded project "Building assessment literacy across courses".
