Monash University Critical Care Ultrasound (MUCCU) short courses

In a ground-breaking first, the Department of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences (DMIRS) is joining forces with major Victorian and Interstate Health Services to deliver a series of micro-credential ultrasound short courses.

Monash University Critical Care Ultrasound (MUCCU) short courses cater specifically for emergency physicians, intensivists, anaesthetists, and specialist clinicians in critical care.

Our Monash ultrasound short courses offer a distinctive blend of flexible online learning and practical hands-on ultrasound scanning sessions at participating clinical sites. Throughout these short courses, trainee clinicians are guided by lead critical care ultrasound clinical medical specialists and highly experienced sonographers, with support from education experts at Monash University.

MUCCU Ultrasound Physics for Clinical Imaging

This short course offers an overview of ultrasound physics and equipment instrumentation. Participants will acquire knowledge about ultrasound beam formation and its interactions with various body tissues when applied to clinical image acquisition. Students will be able to describe how an image is generated, how to correctly identify and differentiate pathologies from imaging artifacts, acquire in-depth knowledge of the limitations of ultrasound, and develop the ability to optimise equipment settings to examine patients both safely and with high acuity.

MUCCU Clinical Lung Ultrasound

This short course integrates theoretical understanding of anatomy, physiology, and ultrasound instrumentation in the lung ultrasound scanning for the diagnosis of lung parenchymal disease. The module introduces participants to the requisite knowledge required to perform a lung ultrasound examination in clinical context ranging, from febrile/breathless/shocked/arrested patients. Participants will engage in scanning patients at their own clinical site under supervision to apply these principles and develop basic practical skills in the clinical environment. They will also be required to demonstrate their ability to interpret ultrasound findings and make correct decisions regarding the clinical management plan.

MUCCU Basic Echocardiography

This short course integrates the theoretical knowledge of anatomy, physiology and ultrasound instrumentation in Critical Care Echocardiography scanning for the recognition of significant heart disease and assisting management. The module introduces you to the requisite knowledge required not only to perform a CCE examination but also interpret findings in specific haemodynamic settings. You will participate in the scanning of patients at your own clinical site under supervision to enable you to apply these principles and develop basic practical skills in the clinical environment.
