Dr Shan Kou

Profile

Dr Shanshan Kou is a physicist and filmmaker with over a decade of experience in academic research and teaching, specialising in medical imaging and optical physics.

She completed her PhD at the National University of Singapore and held research roles at EPFL (Switzerland) and the University of Melbourne as an ARC DECRA Fellow. In 2015, she became a Teaching and Research (T&R) Lecturer at La Trobe University, leading a research program in 3D tomographic nanoscopy and securing over $1.3 million in competitive funding.

In 2023, Shan joined SBS as a shooter-producer, creating visual stories that communicate complex ideas to diverse audiences. She became a Senior Lecturer at Monash in 2025, where she integrates her media expertise to support cross-disciplinary innovation in teaching, research, and public engagement.

Her interests include medical and biomedical imaging, photonics, and the creative use of media in science communication and education.
