Cheers to Careers 2023

In conjunction with the Monash Health Science Society, our School educators were pleased to co-host our annual 'Cheers to Careers' event, a fun and informative evening building career awareness among our undergraduate students, as they make important decisions around workforce entry and further study.

This year saw a welcome return to the in-person format for the first time since 2019, and we had over 55 people attend.

Over the course of the evening our educators showcased opportunities available to our students during and after their degree.

Industry and research placements are an important opportunity offered through our School, and Bethany Howard illustrated the value they provide students in terms of real-world experience and networking, a key skill for those entering a competitive job market.

Deputy Head of School (Education portfolio) Prof Dragan Ilic showcased how our multiple postgraduate degrees across public health build specific knowledge skills, advance careers, and provide students with an entry point into the world of medical research.

Lecturer, supervisor and health and social care researcher Dr Darshini Ayton facilitated an inspiring rapid panel featuring former Health Science (Honours) students. Her questions helped Dr Danielle Berkovic and Shivangi Shah share how they’d progressed their careers in different directions from the same starting point.

MC duties fell to lecturer Stav Zandes, who did a brilliant job facilitating an alumni panel where former Health Science or Public Health students Alana Sadeghi, Danielle Illman and Kate Rabel shared their career experiences and advice with our soon-to-be graduates.

The panellists’ key lessons? The importance of volunteering, building the confidence to sell yourself, having the flexibility and willingness seize unusual opportunities, and being your authentic self.

As the event wrapped up, everyone seized the opportunity to network with guest speakers and peers. We were really pleased with the post-event survey, which showed 93 per cent of our attendees agreed that the event was useful to them; that’s our main aim!

This event runs annually, if you would like to know more about the event and similar opportunities please contact bethany.howard@monash.edu.
