PHR5151 - Pharmacy Inquiry and Innovation Project
This program relates to the Global Elective Inquiry Project, undertaken by fourth year BPharm and BPharm/MPharm students. Our PharmAlliance partners are amongst the top ranked Pharmacy educators in the world and this is a great opportunity for you to meet other passionate pharmacists from across the globe.
Places are limited but successful applicants will complete the requirements of the unit PHR5151 Inquiry and Innovation Projects abroad. Students will be supported by Monash staff in Australia and have access to an in-country supervisor from our host partner.
Duration: 8 weeks
IMPORTANT NOTE
Do not make any financial commitments (e.g. flights, accommodation bookings etc.) until you have:
- received faculty approval;
- been enrolled into the associated unit(s); and
- had your application status has changed to "Approved to Travel".

Program Related Expenses
In addition to the Monash tuition fees*, students should consider the following program related expenses for budgetary purposes:
- return flights and transfers;
- visa;
- accommodation;
- food and drink;
- personal expenses; and
- any additional expenses.
Indicative costs for 4 weeks in North Carolina are US$2,100 (the average excluding airfare).
- $800 lodging (if at Kappa Psi House),
- $600 food (making a few meals in house), and
- $700 (transportation/Uber, personal items).
*Monash students will be enrolled in PHR5151 (12 credit points) and charged standard fees according to their verified funding status. This fee will appear on your Monash Fee Statement.
Managing your Safety
Ensuring your health and safety while overseas is a shared responsibility between Monash and you, the traveller.
Monash is committed to ensuring that our programs are COVID-safe by adhering to local regulations and developing COVID-safe plans. Before completing this part of the application for this program, you should be familiar with how we will manage the risk of COVID-19 disruptions and support your safety.
Staff and participants must familiarise themselves with Monash’s COVID Safe Plan and the strategies to protect themselves and each other:
- Come to campus/activities well - Only attend activities if you are well. You may be directed to take a COVID-19 test if you are unwell and be required to isolate until you have recovered.
- Physical distancing - Adhere to local physical distancing rules.
- Masks - Wear masks when required and/or when physical distancing cannot be achieved.
- Personal hygiene - Hand washing and hand sanitizer to be made available and used regularly.
- Increased cleaning - We will work with providers to ensure cleaning standards are high among our providers.
- Well ventilated spaces - Windows and doors will be open during group activities (where possible).
- Positive case management - If you are unwell, you will be supported to obtain a COVID-19 test and a staff member will ensure you have access to support.
Important note: you may be required to take a COVID-19 test before travelling internationally by the airline or government of destination country/ies. If you test positive, you may not be able to travel as planned, which could delay your arrival at your destination. If this occurs in the host location our staff and partners will support you until you recover and are able to travel.

Monash Support
This program has been designed in adherence to the University’s policies and procedures pertaining to risk management, travel and student mobility. The program leaders have been trained to mitigate risks and respond appropriately in an emergency. The program managers have selected travel services and partners according to their ability to deliver safe and quality services.
While on this program you will be covered by the Monash student travel insurance which includes access to Global 24 emergency assistance (+61 2 9312 5191). Other emergency contact details are available via Monash Abroad.
Your Responsibilities
You are responsible for managing your safety and wellbeing by completing all programmatic requirements and taking action on advice provided.
Below is a list (not exhaustive) of pre-departure tasks that we recommend you complete:
- Subscribe to travel alerts for your destination country/ies via the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Smartraveller website.
- Review the Travel health, safety and security advice on the Monash Abroad website.
- Visit your doctor to discuss your travel plans and ensure you can effectively manage your health while you are away.
- Apply for or renew your passport (you must have at least 6 months validity after your travel end date on your passport).
Monash Abroad Travel Grant
Monash students studying in Australia who are enrolled into a credit bearing unit for this program will receive a Monash Abroad travel grant if they are not otherwise receiving any other scholarship that is intended to cover most or all of your travel/tuition costs for your program.
OS-HELP Loan
OS-HELP is a Commonwealth Government loan program that provides financial assistance to eligible Commonwealth Supported Place students, to undertake some of their study overseas.
If you are eligible for the loan and wish to apply, please submit your application as per the relevant OS-HELP loan term deadline, even if you have not been accepted into your overseas program by that deadline.
The OS-HELP loan (if applicable) will be paid approximately 4 weeks prior to program commencement. Therefore, these funds should not be considered as your primary source of funding to pay program related deposits and balances.

Eligibility
Places are limited and applications will be assessed on a competitive basis. To apply for this program, you must:
- be enrolled in P3001 or P6001 at the Monash Parkville campus;
- be in your 4th year by the time the program commences;
- have completed at least 144 credit points or intend to complete the credit points by the time the program commences;
- have a WAM of 60% or above; and
- submitted a personal statement as part of the application.
Personal statement
At the start of the Personal statement field, indicate:
- that you can meet visa requirements and confirm you can cover the costs associated as part of the application process.
Then in your personal statement, address the following questions:
- Why would you like to undertake this program?
- What three key objectives do you hope to gain from this international inquiry project?
Write no more than 200 words. Tip: write the statement in Word, where you can count the words, and then paste it into the application form.
Places are limited and applications will be assessed on a competitive basis considering your WAM and personal statement.

How to Apply
Step 1: Apply for this Program
Follow these instructions when you are completing the application.
Step 2: When completing the form
- Fill in the fields as described in the first half of the form.
- Check the “Monash-led programs” button in the Program details section.
- Select the program name from the drop-down menu.
- In your personal statement, address the points listed above under Personal statement.
- Complete the rest of the form, read and agree to the Terms and Conditions and submit the form by the deadline.
Note, the deadline is 11pm on 3 September. While you can submit the form after that time, the responses are recorded with a date and time stamp, and any late submissions will be discarded.
Assessment will be undertaken by your faculty.
Step 3: Enrolment and travel approval
If you are accepted into the program, you will be issued with an outcome email and your faculty will enrol you into the associated unit. You will also receive an email alert with another two forms for you to complete:
- Passport and medical details and
- Travel Approval Request Form.
Once you have submitted both of those forms, Monash Abroad will approve you for travel. You will then have access to the travel insurance coverage and be issued with any relevant grants and scholarships.
Important note: you must have a valid passport that does not expire until at least six months after the program end date.
