PERSONAL Trial
Personalised Selection of Medication for Newly Diagnosed Adult Epilepsy (PERSONAL) Trial
The PERSONAL Trial is crucial for improving future epilepsy care.

The PERSONAL Trial is a randomised controlled trial (RCT) designed to examine the effectiveness of an artificial intelligence (AI) tool compared to usual clinical practice in selecting first antiseizure medication (ASM).
Participants that enrol in the trial are assigned to one of two groups with different study procedures that are compared to each other after the trial. Neither the participant nor the doctor reviewing them during follow up are aware of what group the participant was allocated to.
The PERSONAL Trial will continue the development of a potential tool that can predict patient’s response to ASM and how well the ASM will work, so physicians can prescribe the most effective treatment to optimise patient outcomes.
Detailed information about the trial can be found at the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry.
This project has been approved by the Alfred Hospital Ethics Committee (Project Number: 94107).
What’s involved? What are participants required to do?
Participants attend a baseline study visit to be randomised into one of the two study groups as well as receive their initial ASM prescription (see the "patient journey" diagram below). At both this visit and 5 follow-up appointments over the 12-month study period participants will complete questionnaires and assessments discussing their ongoing health and quality of life, they will also be asked to maintain both a seizure and healthcare use diary.
Get involved
If you’re interested to learn more about the PERSONAL Trial, please consult your neurologist. Enrolment in the study takes place after a referral from a specialist at one of our recruiting hospitals.
- We're recruiting participants until the middle of 2026.
- The trial will continue to run until the middle of 2027 as participants complete the remaining study procedures.
