2026 Japan GRIP Program

The Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences (MNHS) is now recruiting for a reciprocal study tour to Chiba University, Tokyo, Japan.

Join us this November for an unforgettable two-week journey to Japan, where learning goes beyond the classroom. Hosted by the prestigious Chiba University: a top national university renowned for its leadership in health sciences, engineering, and disaster resilience, this immersive program offers a rare opportunity to explore two crucial global issues:

🔹 Healthy ageing
🔹 Social inclusion
🔹 Disaster preparedness.

You'll collaborate alongside Japanese students in an interprofessional environment, exchanging ideas and approaches across diverse areas of interest. This immersive learning experience will take place at Chiba University's campus, just outside Tokyo, and through local field visits and hands-on activities designed to challenge your thinking, build your cultural capabilities, and expand your global perspective.

Program Costs

Program Cost: Approximately AU$2200 (excluding flights)
Deposit payment:  A$600 (due on the 14/08/2026)
Final Payment: Balance due 45 days pre-departure (Approximately 01/10/26)

Program costs include:

  • Program and single accommodation costs
  • Breakfast daily
  • Suica card for public transport
  • Farewell dinner on final day
  • Complimentary Monash University Travel Insurance for the duration of the tour and 15 days either side of the study tour dates.

Program costs do not include:

  • Flights and airport transfers
  • Visa (if required - see information below)
  • Pre-travel medical expenses/vaccinations
  • Personal/local travel outside of program activities
  • Medical expenses (which may be claimable via the insurance policy)
  • Meals and drinks not included in the program
  • Personal expenses.

Travel insurance

If you are an actively enrolled Monash student and participating in an approved international program, you will be provided with complimentary travel insurance. You will automatically be covered once your application has been approved and your enrolment updated to reflect your study overseas.

Under this policy, travellers will also receive access to 24/7 emergency assistance provided by Global 24 Emergency Assistance and limited coverage for personal travel days.

Visas

Monash Abroad cannot provide advice regarding visa requirements. Monash Abroad will issue you with supporting documentation to lodge your visa application once you have completed all Monash Abroad requirements and are approved for travel. If you require supporting documentation earlier in the process, please contact Monash Abroad.

Centrelink support documents

For the purposes of maintaining your Centrelink benefits during your overseas program, Monash Abroad can produce a letter confirming your participation in a study tour. Please note that this will be issued to you once you have completed all Monash Abroad requirements and are approved for travel.

Important Note:

The grants available for this program are administered by Chiba University. Monash University and Monash Abroad do not have jurisdiction over these grants. Information will be provided to you about these grants by the Activity Leaders and/or the MNHS Faculty.

Chiba University Grants

Chiba University will be offering Monash students some funding to participate in this study tour. The total funding amount is still to be confirmed, is subject to conversion, transaction and administrative fees and may be paid to you in Japanese yen.

There are two grants that you may receive as part of your participation in this program:

  • GRIP Grant: up to approx. AU$800 (subject to exchange rate at the time of payment), to be paid to students at the end of the program via Reho Study Tours. You can read more about the GRIP grant scheme here.
  • JASSO Grant: up to AU$240 (subject to exchange rate at the time of payment), will be paid to students in cash on arrival and is intended to be used while in-country.

This funding is provided by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan. This funding is not guaranteed and is at the discretion of the Japanese Government.

Eligibility

Places are limited and applications will be assessed on a competitive basis. To apply for this program, you must:

  • Be a student of one of the following disciplines:
    • Medicine: Year 3
    • Nursing: Year 3
    • Physiotherapy: Bachelor of Physio (Honours) Year 4 and Doctor of Physio Year 3
    • Paramedicine: Year 3
    • Pharmacy: Year 3
    • Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (Honours): Year 3
    • Bachelor of Psychology: Year 3
  • have a WAM of 70% or above
  • have completed at least 48 credit points at time of travel
  • have an excellent professionalism track record
  • Submit a Personal Statement, your personal statement should address:
    • Why you would like to participate in this program
    • Your approach to representing Monash University with an international partner
    • What you hope to learn form this experience
    • What you will contribute to this program.

Preference may be given to students who have not yet had a Monash mobility experience during their degree.

Step 2: Faculty assessment and outcomes

MNHS staff will review all applicants after the deadline to assess eligibility to participate in this overseas program. Please note that this generally takes two weeks after applications have closed.

If you are accepted into the program, you will be issued with an offer letter that you will need to accept. The offer letter will also include access details for you to complete the Passport and medical details form.

Step 3: Enrolment and travel approval

Once you accept your offer, you will be enrolled into the relevant unit/s. Monash Abroad will then review your Passport and medical details form and issue you with the final step: Travel Approval Request Form.

Once you completed all of these requirements, Monash Abroad will approve you for travel. You will then have access to the travel insurance coverage and be issued with any relevant grants and scholarships.
