New 24/7 study space pilot set to kick off at the Matheson Library
Monash University Library will pilot a 24/7 study space at the Matheson Library, in Semester 1, 2025 to accommodate the growing demand for flexible study options.
The initiative has been developed in partnership with Monash’s Building and Property Division and the Monash Student Association. It will provide staff and students with a safe and secure study environment, outside the Library’s extended opening hours.
Accessing the space
The lower ground floor of the Matheson Library has been set aside for the pilot. Access is through the eastern entrance, via swipe card.
According to University Librarian Bob Gerrity, this initiative is a direct response to the needs and preferences expressed by students.
“This pilot is designed to offer a safe and welcoming place to study – whether you are a night owl or early riser, a shift worker or need to commute a long way to Monash,” Mr Gerrity said.
A safe place to study and research
The Monash University Security team will patrol the area, and be on-site to assist with any concerns. People using the space can request an on-campus escort when they are heading home.
A big area of focus for the Monash teams that worked together to develop this pilot was to foster a shared sense of place for people who use the space, Mr Gerrity said.
“We were able to draw expertise from across Monash to develop a comprehensive plan so that we maintain a respectful and inclusive environment for everybody,” he said.
This has included site-wide improvements to improve the line-of-site at the eastern entrance, a holistic review of security measures and community-building programming embedded into the pilot.
After-hours users can also use the Monash BSafe app to report an issue.

Services available and feedback
The lower ground floor of the Matheson has a kitchenette with access to hot and cold water and bookable meeting rooms.
People using the space are invited to send their feedback either on our dedicated whiteboard or through librarians@monash.edu
The Library will work with our Monash partners, including the Monash Student Association, to review the 24/7 study space throughout the semester, Mr Gerrity said.
“Where possible, we’ll make changes in response to feedback as it progresses,” he said.
The Library will also draw on our well-developed user experience testing program to ensure the voices and experiences of people using the space are captured.
