Tips for searching
Learn how you can find and access non-Monash theses.
Theses in our collection have different access categories depending on the sensitivity of content, and preference of the author.
Here's our guide to understanding theses access.
Open access
The bibliographical details and the full-text of the thesis are publicly discoverable. You can immediately view and download the thesis. Copyright remains with the author and the thesis is only available for reading, not reuse.
Open access increases the visibility of your research, through discovery via Google Scholar, Trove and similar services. While Open access creates the possibility for more readers and citations of your work, there are very rare cases where theses have been illegally misappropriated for sale. Contact us if you have questions.
Restricted access
The full-text of the thesis is available for research purposes only. A copy can be supplied under Section 51(2) of the Australian Copyright Act 1968 by submitting a document delivery request through your library. Monash researchers can submit a request online.
Embargo
The full-text of the thesis is under an embargo until a specified date. During this time, no access can be granted to the thesis. After this time, the thesis will become openly available to view and download.
Embargo / Restricted
The full-text of the thesis is under an embargo until a specified date. During this time, no access can be granted to the thesis.
Once the embargo has lapsed, the thesis will be available as 'restricted' access for research purposes only. A copy can be supplied under Section 51(2) of the Australian Copyright Act 1968 by submitting a document delivery request through your library.
Did you complete your PhD or Masters by Research at Monash?
Monash University theses are housed in the University's Research Repository, Bridges. We’re encouraging former Monash PhD and Masters students to contact the Library and give us permission to make their thesis open access.
Benefits of going open access
Open research improves access, transparency and reproducibility, which provides benefits for researchers, research communities, research institutions, governments, industry, and society more generally.
For researchers, the benefits of open access include:
- increased visibility and citations,
- greater social impact and public engagement with research by enabling access for individuals and organisations outside of academia, and
- increased opportunities for collaborations and cross-disciplinary research.
Ownership and open access
Your thesis has been uploaded to the Monash University Research Repository (Bridges) with a clear statement that copyright sits with you, the author. This will not change when requesting your thesis to be made open access. The full text of the thesis will be available to read and download.
Monash University Library, as custodians of the Monash University Thesis Collection, reserves the right to publish, distribute and communicate to these to the public for the purpose of:
- making the thesis available for access through the Repository under the terms of access chosen by the author.
- modifying the thesis record only as required for the technical operation or organisation of the Repository.
- making and keeping copies of the thesis for security, back-up, archives and preservation.
Full Bridges Terms and Conditions are available online.
