About the project
More than one billion people worldwide live in urban informal settlements, where polluted water and inadequate sanitation drives a disproportionate burden of preventable disease.
RISE is addressing this inequity by a) recruiting 24 informal settlements – 12 in Fiji and 12 in Indonesia, and building innovative water-sensitive infrastructure to improve human and environmental health, and b) rigorously assessing the impacts of the upgrades on the health of the community and the health of the environment through a randomised control trial (RCT).
The program began in 2017, thanks to a major grant from the Wellcome Trust, with the RCT scheduled to conclude at the end of 2026.
