Using Asian Collections in teaching and learning
Our Asian collections can be used in Object-Based Learning (OBL) classes led by the Special Collections team. OBL is learning that is anchored in direct, physical engagement with real objects such as books, papers and materials held in Special Collections. It is a pedagogical approach that encourages students to engage with items and to use their curiosity – examining, questioning, discussing and constructing knowledge through contact with real materials.
For example, Power Struggles: Anti-colonialism and Anti-racism in History - a second year History subject - has worked with the Special Collections team closely for five years using materials from the Asian Collections to run OBL classes. Students use the collections as primary and secondary source research material to inspire and underpin their key assessments. Materials available include: political speeches, pamphlets, newspapers, magazines, letters, CIA files as well as books.
