Emma Wilkinson

Chief Radiographer
Richmond Diagnostic Imaging
Bachelor Radiographer and Medical Imaging (Honours) 2004
Post Graduate Certificate Health Services Management 2010

Radiography is a very progressive and rewarding profession. Since graduating as a radiographer the rate of imaging technology advancements has meant that I am continuing learning new techniques and concepts. Studying radiography at Monash University has provided me with the opportunity to work as a radiographer in the UK, at some of the largest teaching hospitals in England and Northern Ireland. Mixing a profession I enjoy with travel has definitely been a highlight of my short career.

In addition to my overseas employment, I have been fortunate to work for Healthcare Imaging Services based at the Epworth Hospital in Melbourne for eight years where I have undertaken various roles in staff education, modality supervision and management. I am currently the Chief Radiographer and enjoy the challenge of managing a large staff base mixed with a clinical rotation. Since moving into the management side of radiology I have completed additional study in Health Services Management, which has provided me with further skills and opportunities.

Hang Yee Lau

Hang Yee Lau

(MMU, MSc, MA, RDMS, RVT)
Sonographer, Princess Margaret Hospital, Hong Kong
Master of Medical Ultrasound 2012

I am a sonographer working in a large Hong Kong hospital. In pursuit of more in-depth knowledge in the field of medical sonography, I enrolled in the Master of Medical Ultrasound program in 2008. I chose Monash University because it is internationally renowned and a member of the Group of Eight - the coalition of Australia's most prestigious research-intensive universities.

Although the course was delivered on-line and by distance education, the support from the academic staff was tremendous. The requirements for academic and clinical attainment were stringent. In 2012, I completed the Masters and was awarded the “Student Award of Excellence” by the Australian Sonographers Association for my Masters research project. Moreover, my research presentation (The Effectiveness of Percussing the Mastoid Process for Identification of Vertebral Ostium), also won the “Best Research Paper Grant” and “Best Research Presentation” prizes at the 2013 Annual National Conference of the Australian Sonographers Association held in Sydney. The paper has also been accepted by the Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine for publication. My study at Monash has rewarded me many times over.

In the future, I will strive for excellence in my clinical work and will engage in research projects as the opportunities arise. I am proud of being a graduate of Monash University.

Keith VanHaltren

Keith VanHaltren

Bachelor of Radiography and Medical Imaging (Honours) 2004
Master of Medical Ultrasound 2011

I am currently employed as a Senior Sonographer at Monash Health, Victoria’s largest public Health service provider. The most rewarding aspect of working for Diagnostic Imaging at Monash Health is being part of the clinical teams that manage high risk pregnancies, fetal abnormalities and critically ill neonates.

The Master of Medical ultrasound provided me with the fundamental knowledge to Medical Research. I gained invaluable experience in the important processes of conducting a research project such as formulating a hypotheses, preparing an ethics submission, collecting data as well as interpreting and presenting the results.

Since graduating from Monash University, the oral presentation skills I acquired have allowed me to present at numerous national conferences. I was fortunate enough to also win a prize for the ‘Best First Time Presenter’ at the ASUM National conference in Sydney in 2012.

The research project I conducted as part of my final year of the Masters Program investigating the visualisation of the near field lateral ventricle in mid trimester obstetric ultrasound scans was accepted for publication in the Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine, an international, peer reviewed ultrasound journal.

Meagan Dunn

Meagan Dunn

Radiation Therapist
Master of Medical Radiations (Radiation Therapy) 2013
Other qualifications: Bachelor of Health Science

Why did you choose RT/Monash? I wanted to work in an area of health care where I would experience a lot of patient contact, where I would get to know the patients and be able to establish trusting relationships. The Monash course allows for the developement of not only technical and academic skills, but the many clinical hours allowed me to further develop my interpersonal skills and patient care which I consider very important aspects of being a radiation therapist.

How the course has helped you: The online learning component of the course has developed my ability to be self directed in my learning. This has meant that I have developed time management skills, organisation skills and the ability to work independently.

The course has opened my eyes to future oppotunities in research. The support from Monash staff members has increased my interest in be involved in future research projects. I have also been provided the opportunity to collaborate with a member of staff in publishing one of my papers I wrote during the course.
