APG5390 Contemporary tourism and development in emerging economies (Fiji Field School)
APG5390 Contemporary tourism and development in emerging economies (Fiji Field School)
This exclusive intensive field-school is designed to provide Master of International Sustainable Tourism Management students in APG5390 (via experiential learning) a greater understanding of key issues and trends that are shaping the growth of the contemporary international tourism industry. Note, classes in APG5390 will be delivered pre departure at Caulfield campus and post-trip via Zoom. The final paper will be due mid January.
The destination
Fiji has been selected as the host destination given the significant growth that the industry has been experiencing over recent years. The UNWTO identifies that in ‘Oceania’ over 70% of total services exports and approximately 12% of total exports are accounted for by the tourism industry. (pre covid)
Objective
The field trip will build upon the key issues we have discussed in the lecture series delivered on campus pre-departure.
*The challenges of emerging economy development compared to advanced economies.
*The history of tourism development patterns in the Pacific from colonialism to independent states.
*The impact of behavioural patterns of non-institutionalised vs institutionalised tourists.
*The role remote indigenous communities can play in the tourism economies.
*The role of the private sector, the national airline and national tourist office and government in setting the frame conditions for development.
*Sustainability challenges for tourism development in small island developing states (SIDS).
