Accommodation

Bocconi offers on-campus accommodation in seven University Residences.  In order to apply for housing at Bocconi, you will need to complete a separate housing application for the relevant period after you have completed your exchange application. Housing applications are managed directly by the central Bocconi Housing Office.

Bocconi provides further advice on accommodation.

Visas

As a general rule, all students must obtain a student visa from the Italian Consulate-General before leaving Australia. Within eight days of arriving in Italy you must also apply for a resident's permit; your host university will assist you.

For more information on student visas, please refer to the Consulate-General of Italy here.

Bocconi also offers further advice on student visas.

Health and insurance

It is strongly reccommended that you have a health insurance policy which is valid overseas during your exchange.

Bocconi provides more information on health insurance.

When travelling on a Monash Abroad approved program, you are automatically covered under the Monash University Student Travel Insurance policy. This will provide cover to and from your exchange.

Orientation and extra-curricular

Bocconi organises a series of Welcome Activities to help new exchange students settle in (attendance is mandatory).

Bocconi also offers exchange students the opportunity to take part in Italian language courses, through an intensive two week crash course two weeks before semester starts, and follow up classes throughout the semester. Registration is required.

Bocconi offers a vibrant student life, with plenty of things to do.

Check out Bocconi University via their Facebook and Instagram pages.

Cost of living

You can usually expect to spend a range of €700 – 1200 per month to cover living expenses, such as housing, food and transportation. Milan is one of the most expensive cities in Italy and housing may cause an increase in spending.

Bocconi provides guidance on the estimated costs of living in Milan.

For information about funding available to support study on exchange overseas, see the Financial Information page on the Monash Abroad website.

Students taking Italian language courses may be eligible for the Walter Mangold Study Abroad Scholarship.

Study Experience

I took International Relations, European Economic Policy, International Macroeconomics and Marketing Communication and enjoyed them all, especially the first two! International Relations was taken by Paolo Magri, Executive Vice President and Director of the Italian Institute for International Political Studies, who was excellent in his analysis. I enjoyed the interactive nature of lectures at Bocconi too.

Culture

Living in Milan was an incredible experience! Italian food and coffee culture are wonderful, with plenty of cappuccinos in the morning and espressos for the rest of the day, along with Panzerottis for lunch! Milan is quite a fashionable city too and even though I'm not that into fashion myself it's impossible not to notice it! The Duomo and Galleria nearby are absolutely magical and each time you walk through the city centre you're just as amazed as you were the first time. Milan is right in the heart of Europe too and thus a perfect base from which to explore the continent.

Benefits of going on exchange

I'd never been away from home for more than a fortnight before exchange, so this experience greatly increased my independence and self-confidence. It gave me a love for travel and exploration, and for that I'll always be grateful.

Career Benefits

Going on exchange has made me a calmer and more independent individual, and much more flexible too. All of these traits will help me in my future career!

Top tips

  • Travel as much as possible!
  • Attend as many orientation events as possible to make friends that you will grow close to over the semester of your exchange, and keep for life
  • Be open to new experiences and cultures
  • Choose subjects that fascinate you and that aren't offered at Monash, especially if you're studying electives on exchange.
  • Unless you're going on exchange with a friend from home, stay at the uni dorm to help you make friends.
  • Don't be afraid to ask previous Monash exchange students about their experiences, especially via the MOVE Facebook group.
  • Make the most of every moment
