Cardiff University

Cardiff University

Cardiff University is an ambitious and innovative university with a bold and strategic vision located in a beautiful and thriving capital city. With more than 30,000 students and over 7,000 international students, it is the 8th largest university in the UK in terms of student numbers.

Academic Highlights

Cardiff University is composed of three colleges: Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; Biomedical and Life Sciences; and Physical Sciences and Engineering. Its world-leading research was ranked 5th amongst UK universities and 2nd on its impact in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework for quality.

Location

Cardiff is the capital and largest city in Wales. Its rich culture has a diverse range of influences from the Romans and Normans of antiquity to the industrial revolution and the coal industry –which transformed Cardiff from a small town into a thriving city.  A compact, friendly and inexpensive location, Cardiff also has the cultural and recreational facilities of a modern capital city. The University's campus sits within the city centre, with wide tree-lined avenues and elegant Portland stone buildings.

In 1885, Aberdare Hall opened as the first hall of residence for women who had been allowed entry to the University in its Royal Charter the year before. In 1904 came the appointment of the first female associate professor in the UK, Millicent Mackenzie, who in 1910 became the first female full professor at a chartered UK university.

Browse study abroad modules (units), the University provides additional guidance on choosing modules under the 'create your study programme' heading.

As a visa requirement, you will be required to enrol in 60 credits per semester, with half of the credits being from one Academic School. Most modules are worth 10 or 20 credits.

Dentistry, Healthcare Sciences, Medicine, Optometry, Pharmacy, Architecture are not available to exchange students and there are limited spaces in Psychology. Bioseciences and Earth Sciences are mainly year long (September to June) units only so not open to students only wanting to do one semester at Cardiff on exchange.

Due to demand, priority for modules in some Academic Schools will be given to incoming students applying for units in which they are majoring at their home institution.

Accommodation

Cardiff University endeavours to house students in university accommodation and will provide housing support to all incoming student.  See the Study accommodation web pages for further information.

If you speak or want to learn Welsh you can request a place in the flats at Senghennydd Court and Talybont North, which are reserved for undergraduate students who are Welsh speakers or learners.

Visas

Non-UK or European Union citizens must have a valid student visa to undertake an exchange period.  To apply, you will need a visa support letter - Confirmation of Acceptance - from the University.  If studying for more than six months, then a Tier 4 (general) student visa will likely be required.  If studying for less than six months, a short-term study visa may be the alternative. The short-term study visa is the simpler and cheaper option for entering the UK, however, it cannot be extended and no work can be undertaken (paid or unpaid) while in the UK.

If you are not a national of a majority English-speaking country you may also need to meet UK Border Agency language requirements. Be sure to check the requirements.

For more information on student visas, read the web pages of the UK Government's GOV.UK Visa and immigration web pages.

The University also offers further guidance on its visas and immigration web pages.

Health and insurance

If you're studying in the UK for more than six months, you will likely be on a Tier 4 (general) student visa and so need to pay an Immigration Health Surcharge in order to access free health services under the National Health Service (NHS) once inside the UK.  Students studying for less than six months are strongly recommended to have comprehensive health insurance.

When travelling on a Monash Abroad approved program, you are automatically covered under the Monash University Student Travel Insurance policy. This will provide cover to and from your exchange.

Orientation and extra-curricular

At the start of the autumn semester, Cardiff University provides an orientation for new incoming international students. There are sessions specifically for exchange and study abroad students and a range of social events in which to get involved. The University also runs an induction program for those students studying with us in the spring semester.

There is a vibrant student life, with an active student union which coordinates the clubs and societieswelfare, and events, as well as a range of different sports and free language classes to join.

Cost of living

The University provides further information on estimated living costs for exchange students. Note that in 2023 Cardiff was ranked second in the 2023 NatWest Student Living Index as one of the most cost-effective cities for UK students, and one of the most affordable.

Funding

For information about other funding available to support study on exchange overseas, see the Financial Information page on the Monash Abroad website.
