Eberhard Karl University of Tübingen (UoT) was founded in 1477 by Count Eberhard “The Bearded” and is not so much a campus university but one that commands much of the city of Tübingen itself. It has nearly 30,000 students enrolled in seven faculties that offer 330 degree programs.
Academic Highlights
UoT offers both Catholic and Protestant theology alongside law, medicine, humanities, economics and social science and science. It is considered a leader in the area of German Studies and does important ongoing research related to neuroscience, elementary particle physics and nanotechnology.
Location
Tübingen is a classic German university town with about one out of three of the people living there studying at the university. It’s situated in Baden-Württemberg, about 30km south of the region’s capital Stuttgart.

Academic Restrictions/Recommendations
- Medicine units are not open for exchange students.
- It is recommended that you study two lectures and two seminars per semester of exchange at Tübingen.
Language Requirements
- Whilst there are a wide range of units are taught in English, the main language of instruction at Tübingen is German. If you wish to study units taught in German, you are must have a level B2 CEFR in the German language as a minimum.

There is no on-campus accommodation at University of Tübingen but the university does help to provide affordable accommodation for exchange students.

Visas
As a general rule, Australian citizens do not need a visa to enter Germany but after entering will have to apply for a residence permit at the local ‘Auslaenderbehörde’ (Immigration Office) if staying for more than three months. Your host university will assist you with this. Students from other countries may be required to apply for a visa for study purposes at the German Consulate-General in Melbourne.

Health and insurance
By law, all students must have sufficient health cover for their stay in Germany to become registered as a student at a German university and/or to apply for a student visa. Thus, non-EU-students should be careful in selecting a health insurance plan as it has to satisfy the very strict requirements of the university and the immigration office.

When travelling on a Monash Abroad approved program, you are automatically covered under the Monash University Student Travel Insurance policy. This will provide cover to and from your exchange.
Orientation and extra-curricular
Orientation week occurs in the week prior to the start of the semester, involving many events and information sessions for incoming exchange students.

The DAAD offers various scholarships to Australian students, there may be scholarships available to exchange students and are subject to change. Find out more here.
