Location

The campus is located in the city of Rotterdam, one hour from Amsterdam. Rotterdam is an edgy and entrepreneurial city, famous for its pop-up shops, creative bars and festivals in addition to its constantly changing skyline. The campus at Erasmus University, Rotterdam is like a mini-city.

With its huge port, famously multicultural population, and many multinational companies, Rotterdam – the Netherlands’ second biggest city – is an environment full of real-life cases, relevant data and research partners. Thanks to its international train station and local airport, Rotterdam is also an excellent base from which to explore Europe. English is an unofficial second language here and nearly everyone you meet will be happy to speak English with you, even off-campus.

Accommodation

On-campus accommodation is available but places are extremely limited. EUR will help most international students will find accommodation through the private market. It is advised that students commence organising their accommodation around three months prior to their arrival into the Netherlands.

Visas

As a general rule, if you are from outside EU/EAA countries and plan to stay in the Netherlands for more than 90 days, you will need to apply for an entry visa and/or Dutch residence permit. The residence permit is the document required for students to stay and study in the Netherlands legally.  Both the entry visa and residence permit are issued by the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND).

Health and insurance

When travelling on a Monash Abroad approved program, you are automatically covered under the Monash University Student Travel Insurance policy. This will provide cover to and from your exchange.

Medical costs can be high in the Netherlands, Dutch law requires all residents to have adequate health and third party liability insurance. Students must provide proof that they have adequate health insurance as stipulated by Dutch law, to obtain their entry visa/residence permit.

Orientation and extra-curricular 

Prior to the each trimester, an orientation introduction programme is organised, and is compulsory for all incoming students.

The Erasmus Student Network Rotterdam (ESN-Rotterdam) and International Offices aim to enhance academic and social experiences for international students in Rotterdam. The network regularly organises drinks, city trips, sporting activities, musical and cultural events. Find out more here.

Students can improve their Dutch by utilising the Erasmus University Rotterdam’s Language Centre. Please note, there is a fee associated with these courses.
