Effective Semester 1, 2027 (February to June 2027), students of Chinese nationality are no longer eligible to participate in the Fudan university-level exchange program.
There are three types of exchange students at Fudan University:
1) “Chinese Language Students” who only take designated Chinese language courses (such as listening, speaking, reading and writing) for about 20-hours study per week.
2) “General Advanced Students” take undergraduate-level units in their fields of study which may be taught in Chinese or English. They can also take one of the three Chinese language courses (Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced Chinese), which are only open to “General Advanced Student” for 4-hours a week. (Undergraduate-level courses in medical sciences are not available.)
3) “Senior Advanced Students” take graduate-level units in their area of study in Chinese or English. There are also some Chinese language courses available as electives in the graduate programs.
See Fudan University's Undergraduate English-taught course list here. Select the most recent course list, and it will provide you with links to available courses taught in English and their descriptions, including Chinese language units.
For Chinese-taught units, Fudan advises that students should contact incoming@fudan.edu.cn to request lists of units and syllabus documents.
Students enrolled in Chinese language units will participate in a series of units in Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing available at 8 levels from A (beginner) to H (advanced).

Visas
As a general rule, if you are a non-Chinese citizen you will require a visa to study in China. If studying for more than six months this is usually the ‘X1 visa’; for six months or less this is usually the ‘X2 visa’. All applications must be submitted through a Chinese Visa Application Service Centre after you receive an official acceptance letter from the host university. You will then need to apply for a residence permit.
For more information on visas, please refer to the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China.
Fudan University also provide some advice on visa applications for incoming exchange students.
Health and insurance
The Chinese Department of Education requires all foreign students in China to purchase Foreign Student comprehensive insurance. The host university can assist you with this, which Fudan does by sending a mandatory insurance brochure with your admissions package before you arrive and providing some additional information here.
When travelling on a Monash Abroad approved program, you are automatically covered under the Monash University Student Travel Insurance policy. This will provide cover to and from your exchange.
Orientation and extra-curricular
Orientation will be held at the beginning of the semester.
