Hanken School of Economics

Hanken School of Economics

The Hanken School of Economics (HSE) was founded in 1909, making it one of the oldest business schools in Scandinavia and the Nordic region. Funded largely by the Ministry of Education and Culture, it is the only stand-alone business school in Finland and has the triple crown of international business school accreditation (EQUIS, AMBA, AACSB).

Academic Highlights

Hanken provides an intimate, small student-to-teacher ratio environment where academic excellence, innovative teaching methods and corporate input are all emphasised. It has five departments: Economics, Finance, Management and Organisation, Marketing and Accounting, and Commercial Law, plus a Language Centre.

Location

Hanken has two campuses, one in the capital Helsinki on Finland’s south coast and the other on the west coast at Vaasa, a bilingual city of Finnish and Swedish speakers.

Accommodation

Hanken has no on-campus accommodation, but student accommodation is available from the Foundations for Student Housing (HOAS/VOAS) in the Helsinki region and in the city of Vaasa. Please note that in Helsinki the student accommodation is highly competitive, so some students will need to find private accommodation. Read the information provided by Hanken about accommodation.

Visas

As a general rule, if you plan to remain in Finland for more than three months you must obtain a residence permit. The Embassy of Finland, Canberra, provides helpful information about applying for the residence permit. This guide for student exchange to Finland also offers information on weather, housing, clothing, transport, and other cultural topics.

Hanken also provides some guidance on obtaining a residence permit.

Health and insurance

In order to obtain a residence permit, exchange students need to have health insurance which meets the requirements set by the Finnish Immigration Service.  Hanken also offers information on health insurance.

When travelling on a Monash Abroad approved program, you are automatically covered under the Monash University Student Travel Insurance policy.

Orientation and extra-curricular

A compulsory orientation course is provided prior to the semester commencing.

Hanken also offers a pickup service, described under the 'Pickup' subheading, where a local tutor can pick you up from the airport, bus or railway station and take you to your apartment (registration required).

Check out their video induction to the Hanken Student Association.
