Accommodation

Undergraduate exchange students are able to apply for accommodation in university-provided accommodation. While a place cannot be guaranteed, the majority of exchange students are assigned to a double in a student hall for the program duration.

HKUST offers advice for on-campus (undergraduate and postgraduate) and off-campus accommodation.

Visas

As a general rule, if studying in Hong Kong, you will need to obtain a valid student visa/entry permit before arrival. After you are accepted for exchange, your host institution will submit your student visa application to the Hong Kong Immigration Department on your behalf. It normally takes six weeks or longer to process a student visa application, so it is advised that exchange students apply well in advance to ensure that their visa is issued before the beginning their exchange. Details and procedures of visa applications can be found at the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region here.

For more information on visas, please refer to the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China here.

HKUST also provide some advice on obtaining a visa.

Health and insurance

You are required to purchase travel insurance through HKUST that covers the duration of your study.

HKUST will require all exchange students coming to HKUST to subscribe to their travel insurance policy for exchange students - irrespective of any other policies that you  may possess, including that provided by the home institution.  The approximate cost for one semester is HKD 1200 (AUD$210) and for two semester is HKD 2400 (AUD$425). Exact costs and updated coverage will be provided as part of the application process should you be nominated to HKUST. For more information on the current year’s insurance coverage, please visit HKUST's website here.

HKUST offers further advice on insurance here and here.

When travelling on a Monash Abroad approved program, you are automatically covered under the Monash University Student Travel Insurance policy. This will provide cover to and from your exchange.

Orientation and extra-curricular

The Global Student Programs Office host a range of activities for exchange students. Some sections like orientation are compulsory, while others are optional. Find out more here.

HKUST also provides a buddy program for exchange students and many student societies.

Cost of living

HKUST offers some guidance on an estimated budget.

Please note that you are not allowed to work in Hong Kong under the student visa conditions.
