J-ShIP Intensive Japanese Language Program (Study Abroad)

J-Ship (Japan Short-stay In-sessional Program) is a Japanese language-focused program run by Osaka University and attended by students from around the world. The program includes intensive Japanese language classes, cultural activities, and interaction with local students.

Osaka University is one of the prestigious National Seven universities of Japan and has a long academic tradition reaching back to the 18th century when it was founded as the Osaka Prefectural Medical School. It teaches more than 25 000 students over four campuses in Osaka.

There are 11 faculties at Osaka University and it ranks among the world’s best for dentistry, chemical engineering, physics and astronomy and natural sciences. It has five research institutes, two university hospitals and three national joint-use facilities, including the Research Centre for Nuclear Physics and the Cybermedia Centre.

Unit Enrolment

This program is offered as a Study Abroad opportunity only. This means that you will be manually enrolled into an associated Study Abroad unit code (such as ASA2001 or ASA3001) after you have been accepted by your faculty.

This program is not approved for language credit within the Japanese Major or Minor. It may be approved as a Japanese Elective or can be studied as an Arts elective only.

Tuition Fees

You are responsible for paying the full tuition fee directly to the host prior to commencement. This fee cannot be deferred via FEE-HELP.

Program Related Expenses

You will need to budget for the following:

  • Cost of program tuition fee and accommodation (¥210,000) (c. $2,178)
  • Return flights
  • Visa (if required)*
  • Meals
  • Spending money

*All participants are required to obtain a “short-term stay visa” before entering Japan, except for those who are from countries listed as “Countries and Regions that have visa exemption arrangements with Japan". Please refer to the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan for more information.

OS-HELP Loan

OS-HELP is a Commonwealth Government loan program that provides financial assistance to eligible Commonwealth Supported Place students, to undertake some of their study overseas.

If you are eligible for the loan and wish to apply, please submit your application as per the relevant OS-HELP loan term deadline, even if you have not been accepted into your overseas program by that deadline.

The OS-HELP loan will be paid approximately 4 weeks prior to program commencement. Therefore, these funds should not be considered as your primary source of funding to pay program related deposits and balances.

Monash Australia Students

If you are an actively enrolled Monash Australia student and are accepted into this program, you are automatically covered for up to 365 days when travelling on Monash approved activities.

You will be covered for the duration of your program, as well as up to 15 days of personal travel
before and up to 15 days of personal travel after the formal in-country program end date at your host
institution.

Monash Malaysia Students

All Monash Malaysia students participating in any global program, such as global intercampus programs to Monash Australia or a Monash Australia faculty-led global study tours, must purchase their own travel insurance as a compulsory requirement of your program.

Your travel insurance must cover the entire duration of your global program, emergency evacuation, repatriation, personal accident, travel inconvenience, personal liability and others. 

Please note that routine travel insurance purchased with your flight does not cover all of your travel needs, especially your medical needs. Please ensure that your travel insurance does cover all of your travel needs.

Please read and understand the terms and conditions of the travel insurance purchased from the insurance provider.

If you need to make a claim against the insurance policy, you will need to contact the respective insurance company as required by insurance provider to process their claim.

After applications to Monash close, the applications are reviewed by the Japanese Studies Coordinator, and are then sent onto Osaka University, who make the final decision/selection.

Eligibility

Only students enrolled in ATS2144 Japanese Intermediate 2 in semester 2 can apply for this program.

Important note: you must have a valid passport that does not expire until at least six months after the program end date.

CIEE Japanese Language Proficiency Check

Before you apply for this program, you are required to take the Japanese language proficiency check. The test is available on CIEE's website.

Please take Level 300 of the test. To view the Japanese characters on the screen you may need to change the encoding on your web browser to 'Japanese (EUC-JP)'.

Please record your Japanese language proficiency score as you will be required to enter it in the CIEE application form when you apply for this program.

How to Apply to Monash

Step One: Submit the application form

Submit your application here. You must complete the form by the Monash application deadline.

  • Read the instructions on the form and complete the fields not already containing your information from the Monash student system.
  • In the Proposed Summer Program section, select the program from the dropdown menu in which you are interested (e.g. GSP | J-SHIP Intensive Japanese Language Program).
  • Open the Summer Study Plan in another tab.
  • Complete the rest of the application form, read, confirm and agree to the statements in the Conditions, then submit the form by the deadline.

Step 2: Submit your study plan

Return to the Summer Study Plan, which you must complete and submit as your faculty(ies)/school(s) must approve the unit(s) for credit to your Monash degree(s).

  • Read the instructions on the form and complete the fields not already containing your information from the Monash student system.
  • Select  'ISA - Japan - J-SHIP Intensive Japanese Language Program' from the Program Drop-down box.
  • Select 'Study Abroad' in the 'Exchange or Study Abroad' drop-down box.
  • Select  'one unit'
  • For the proposed units of study, write the name of the program - 'J-SHIP 2025'
  • For credits, enter '4 Japanese Credits' (n.b. this is the equivalent of 6 Monash Credits).

Until both the study plan and the application form are submitted, your application will not be considered.

Your application will then be assessed by your faculty and a final list of students will be decided by the Japanese Studies Coordinator.

Monash Abroad will then contact you, letting you know the outcome of your application.

Step 3: Applying to the Host Institution

If completing an ‘Exchange’ program, Monash Abroad will nominate you directly to the partner institution. You will be sent additional instructions on how to apply following the review of your study plan by your faculty/school.

If completing a ‘Study Abroad’ program, after you’ve been accepted by Monash Abroad and your faculty/school, you will apply directly to the host institution via their program website.

Step 4: Acceptance

Once you have applied to the host institution, keep an eye out for their acceptance information.  When you receive your acceptance document, check it carefully to make sure details about your application are correct, such as your name, date of birth, contact information and what you applied to do.  If there are any mistakes, contact the host institution immediately.  If the acceptance documents are correct, forward them to Monash Abroad.

The acceptance will be checked again and, if correct, the process for finalising your program, paying your Travel Grant, if relevant, and changing your enrolment will be triggered.
