Medicine Specialty Year 5 Rotation Exchange
The School of Medicine offers the opportunity to its students in Year 5D to undertake a specialty rotation overseas at one of its five approved partner locations. The travel will occur in either Rotations 3 or 4 during 2027.
Partners
The Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin, in English Charity-University Medicine Berlin, or simply Charité, is the Joint Faculty of Medicine of the Free University of Berlin and Humboldt University of Berlin. Students may apply for any Specialty placement offering listed here. More information can be found on the European-based Erasmus exchange web page. There are four placements available. German language ability is not a prerequisite.
King's College, London (GKT) School of Medical Education runs an elective program for placements in a variety of specialties, a full list of which can be viewed here, and are undertaken at their teaching campus hospitals: Guy's Hospital, King's College Hospital, St Thomas' Hospital and University Hospital Lewisham. There are currently six placements available. Students selected for this program are not required to pay the application fee to GKT.
The National University of Singapore Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine (NUS Medicine) offers medical students from universities outside of Singapore the opportunity to complete an elective posting at one of the NUS Medicine-affiliated hospitals. There are 14 possible hospital locations with five placements available.
University of Osaka Faculty of Medicine offers clinical training opportunities, known as the Medical Frontier Program, for international undergraduate students as a Special Auditor aimed at exposing students to advanced medical research and clinical medicine. Their current placement offerings can be viewed here. There are two placements available. Japanese language ability is not a prerequisite.
Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich provides opportunities for medical students at partner universities to undertake LMU Clinical Rotations hosted by the academic clinical divisions at the LMU University Hospital Munich. From 2026 the LMU overseas opportunity is limited to two students per year for placements in Cardiology only at the LMU University Hospital. The duration of the exchange will be 4–8 weeks, scheduled between April and August.

Malaysia Enrolled Students
Students enrolled in course code M6019 in Malaysia are eligible to apply, note that successful applicants will only be permitted to undertake 2 rotations outside of Malaysia. ie. one international travel program and one rotation in Australia. The rotations do not need to be in sequential order.
NOTE
Students selected to travel in Year 4 (rotation to Karolinska Institute) are ineligible to apply for this rotation in Year 5.
Accommodation and Living
Students will be expected to pay for their own travel, accommodation and living expenses. Information on accommodation will be provided to successful applicants by the host institution.
Health and insurance
You are automatically covered under the Monash University Student Travel Insurance policy.
Language
While there is no language requirement for this program, certain partners have limited English-language specialisations.
- University of Osaka: most departments do not require Japanese proficiency, but some departments will require students to have at least conversational Japanese ability (Cardiovascular Medicine, Metabolic Medicine, Neurology, General Thoracic Surgery). The list of departments is updated each year by University of Osaka.
- Charity-University Medicine Berlin: Students who complete a clinical rotation with only English language skills may only do so in surgical departments or in anesthesiology, since work in these areas does not require direct contact with patients.
- Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich:
Students who can demonstrate at least a B2 level of German proficiency may complete clinical rotations in all departments except emergency medicine, neurology, and psychiatry (which require a C1 level), and can participate in daily morning rounds, ward rounds, and patient history-taking.

Visa requirements will differ depending on your citizenship and the country of your placement. Please follow the advice of your host institution or the relevant visa authorities.

If you are not a Singapore citizen, you may need to apply for a Work Holiday Programme (WHP) visa. Please note that visa processing can take up to 6 weeks, so it’s important to apply early.

OS-HELP Loan
OS-HELP is a Commonwealth Government loan program that provides financial assistance to eligible Commonwealth Supported Place students, to undertake some of their study overseas.
If you are eligible for the loan and wish to apply, please submit your application as per the relevant OS-HELP loan term deadline, even if you have not been accepted into your overseas program by that deadline.
Students selected for the Medicine Specialty Year 5 Rotations (6 weeks) are ineligible for the Monash Abroad Travel Grant.
Important Note:
The Monash Abroad Travel Grant and OS-HELP loan (if applicable) will be paid approximately 4 weeks prior to program commencement and only when all Monash Abroad Portal (MAP) requirements are completed by you. Therefore, these funds should not be considered as your primary source of funding to pay program related deposits and balances.
Monash Abroad Travel Grant
Monash students studying in Australia who are enrolled into a credit bearing unit for this program will receive a Monash Abroad travel grant if they are not otherwise receiving any other scholarship that is intended to cover most or all of your travel/tuition costs for your program (e.g., Global Immersion Guarantee ).
OS-HELP Loan
OS-HELP is a Commonwealth Government loan program that provides financial assistance to eligible Commonwealth Supported Place students, to undertake some of their study overseas.
If you are eligible for the loan and wish to apply, please submit your application as per the relevant OS-HELP loan term deadline, even if you have not been accepted into your overseas program by that deadline.

Important notes:
- You must have a valid passport that does not expire until at least six months after the program end date.
- Selection is based on a personal statement of no more than 500 words and academic results. Students may put in preferences for any discipline for the rotation unless not available at the host institution.
- Due to the limited number of exchange opportunities for the Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine, students will only be eligible to undertake an overseas rotation once during their course. If you previously participated in the Year 4 Karolinska program, you will not be selected for an overseas rotation in Year 5.
- Students enrolled in course code M6019 in Malaysia are eligible to apply, note that successful applicants will only be permitted to undertake 2 rotations outside of Malaysia. ie. one international travel program and one rotation in Australia. The rotations may/may not be in sequential order.
- Students selected for the program are expected to return to Australia in time to commence their next allocated rotation on the first day.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This form should only be completed by students who have already been provided with an offer and are enrolled into BIO3820 unit at Clayton.
Step 1: Complete the Monash Abroad Portal (MAP) registration form
Click the ‘Apply Now' button, complete all sections and submit your MAP registration form by the deadline.
Important note: Incomplete or unsubmitted MAP registrations will not be accepted after the deadline and you will not be permitted to participate in the program.
Step 2: Enrolment
After the deadline, your faculty/ies will enrol you into the associated unit and will update your registration status to 'Accepted and Enrolled by Faculty/ies'. This will be confirmed in an email to your student account.
Step 3: Monash Abroad Registration
Once your enrolment is appearing in WES and your MAP status has been changed to 'Accepted and Enrolled by Faculty/ies'; this will be confirmed in an email to your student account. You will then have access to the travel insurance documentation via your MAP application.
