Nanjing University

Founded in 1902, Nanjing University (NJU), sometimes referred to as Nanda, is one of China's oldest universities and is under the direct supervision of the Chinese Ministry of Education. NJU has seen a range of transformations linked with the country's rich cultural history, and has been known by many different names. It was given its current name in 1952, and is now a member of the C9 League, which comprises the top nine universities in mainland China.

Academic Highlights

NJU is consistently rated, along with Peking University, as the top two institutions for Chinese Language and Literature. It also features prominently in the league tables for natural sciences, chemistry and physical sciences.

Location

NJU is located in the city of Nanjing, approximately 300 kilometres from Shanghai and it the capital of the eastern Jiangsu province. It was the national capital during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) and retains many important heritage sites.

Study in China

For general information on study in China view the Australian Government's AddChina Toolkit

Accommodation

On-campus accommodation is available to exchange students. Due to the limited number of rooms, you may be requested to live in a double-occupancy room with a fellow student of the same gender.  The University provides more information on housing and meals.

Visas

As a general rule, if you are a non-Chinese citizen you will require a visa to study in China. If studying for more than 6 months this is usually the ‘X1 visa’; for 6 months or less this is usually the ‘X2 visa’. All applications must be submitted through a Chinese Visa Application Service Centre after you receive an official acceptance letter from the host university. You will then need to apply for a residence permit.

For more information on visas, please refer to the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China.

Nanjing University also provides information about visas and residence.

Health and insurance

The Chinese Department of Education requires all foreign students in China to purchase Foreign Student comprehensive insurance. The host university can assist you with this. Nanjing University also has information for exchange students on insurance.

When travelling on a Monash Abroad approved program, you are automatically covered under the Monash University Student Travel Insurance policy. This will provide cover to and from your exchange.

Orientation and extra-curricular

Orientation for exchange students will be held at the beginning of the semester, and there are opportunities for students to get involved in extra-curricular life.

The Office of International Cooperation and Exchanges provides support services to exchange students.

Cost of living

Nanjing on the Expatistan site (this is a website external to the University and intended to be indicative only).

The character for the currency "yuan" on price lists is  元.  You might see both “renminbi” and “yuan” used interchangeably. There is essentially no difference. The renminbi is the official currency of the People’s Republic of China, and translates as “the people’s money.” Its international currency code is CNY (or CNH in Hong Kong) but is abbreviated RMB, with the symbol ¥.

The yuan is the name of the unit in which renminbi transactions are denominated, but also refers to the currency generally. Thus, a person might pay for a meal using a 20 yuan note, and get some yuan and jiao (a tenth of a yuan) in change (the jiao is further divided into 10 fen). But they are all renminbi. This is similar to the "pound sterling", which is the name of the British currency, while the price of a pint of beer in a London pub would be stated in pounds and pence.

Funding

Students taking Chinese language courses may be eligible for the Walter Mangold Study Abroad Scholarship.

For information about funding available to support study on exchange overseas, see the Financial Information page on the Monash Abroad website.

Other funding available to students studying on exchange at Fudan University includes the New Colombo Plan Scholarship, the Westpac Asian Exchange Scholarship and the Cheung Kong Endeavour Grant.

Important notes

NJU will not accept applications for exchange from Chinese citizens.

If you want to take units taught in Chinese you will need to sit a language test when you arrive or have a current HSK Language Test result of Level 5 or higher.
