GST | Ōtepoti Dunedin, New Zealand
Ōtepoti Dunedin is a regional city in Aotearoa New Zealand. At the head of Otago Harbour on the South Island’s southeast coast, it is known for its enduring Māori presence, its Scottish colonial history, dramatic landscapes and surf beaches, and a large student population. In this century, much like coastal parts of Narrm Melbourne, Ōtepoti is experiencing the impacts of sea level rise and coastal inundation.
Building on the 2025 event, this Studies Unit is focussed on strategies for climate adaptation and takes place in collaboration with schools of architecture from across Aotearoa New Zealand.
Week one is a series of Zoom lectures with community and climate adaptation experts. Weeks 2 and 3 take place on the ground in Ōtepoti Dunedin in New Zealand’s South Island. Here we will be hosted by Otago Polytechnic School of Architecture, using their studios and accommodation facilities to work collaboratively and with community members on climate adaptation research and proposals for this small city facing significant climate impacts. The final week is self-directed, bringing the findings of your design research together.
