GST | Ōtepoti Dunedin, New Zealand
In this four-week summer school, architecture, landscape architecture, urban design and planning students learn design-research methodologies to explore climate impacts and to propose and test a range of resilience, adaptation, and mitigation strategies for Ōtepoti Dunedin, a small coastal city in Aotearoa New Zealand. Supported by guests from community, local government, industry, climate researchers, local architecture and landscape architecture practitioners and Mana Whenua (traditional custodians), the school models collaboration through interdisciplinary, experiential learning in place to foster a deep ethical awareness, sense of responsibility and built environment practice knowledge towards supporting communities affected by climate change.
Week one is a series of Zoom lectures with community and climate adaptation experts. Weeks 2 and 3 take place on the ground in Ōtepoti Dunedin in New Zealand’s South Island. Here we will be hosted by Otago Polytechnic School of Architecture, using their studios and student accommodation to work collaboratively and with community members on climate adaptation research and proposals for this small city facing significant climate impacts. The final week is self-directed, bringing the findings of your design research together.
This summer school re-casts the city as a school, giving space and time to collectively approach the complexity of climate adaptation, developing a capacity to ‘think connection’ across knowledge areas, disciplines, time-frames and scales.
