Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) was founded in 1986 by POSCO, which remains one of the largest steel companies in the world., It was the first research-oriented university in Korea. It has rapidly grown to become a world-class institution in the fields of engineering and science.

Academic Highlights

POSTECH is one of the top universities in Korea for STEM, particularly in the fields of materials science, mechanical engineering and physics. It is consistently ranked in the top five  Korean institutions overall and is considered to have a highly competitive admissions process.

Location

The campus is located on 400 acres 20 minutes outside of Pohang, a seaside city, about an hour drive from Busan in the south-east of the Korean peninsula. Pohang is well known for scenic beaches and seafood, and  is one of the ports from which you can access the unique volcanic island of Ulleung-do.

Accommodation

All international students are guaranteed a room in the POSTECH student dormitory unless they choose otherwise. Refer to the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) website here for more information (including advice about off-campus housing).

Visas

Students must get a Student Visa (D-2) before travelling to Korea. Once accepted by POSTECH, you receive a certificate of admission. See this page for more information from POSTECH about visas, or contact the local Korean consulate.

All students staying in Korea for longer than 90 days must register for an Alien Registration Card within 90 days from the date of entry to Korea.

Health and insurance

All international students, including exchange students, who plan to stay in Korea for more than three months, must  enrol in the nation-wide insurance plan (NHIS). The estimated cost is approximately ₩71,520 (about $80) per month.

When travelling on a Monash Abroad approved program, you are automatically covered under the Monash University Student Travel Insurance policy. This will provide cover to and from your exchange.

Orientation and extra-curricular

All international students must attend the new international students orientation session, which explains the University procedures and includes a cultural excursion.

POSTECH offers a buddy program (PBUD), where exchange students can participate in meetings and social gatherings. There are a range of activities on campus throughout the year.

Cost of living

POSTECH estimates cost of living (including accommodation, food, insurance etc.) to be approximately $1,100 per month. See the FAQ page for more information.

Funding

Students participating in semester exchanges to eligible locations may be eligible to receive NCP Mobility Grant funding. Eligible students are automatically assessed by Monash Abroad, and are not required to submit a separate application. See here for more information.

Courses (units) in the Department of Semiconductor Engineering are not available to exchange students.
