Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) is the second oldest university in China, founded in 1896. It’s a member of China’s elite C9 League, the equivalent of the Group of Eight (Go8) in Australia, with its economics, management and business schools rating as among the best in the country.

Academic Highlights

SJTU teaches over 42,000 students across nine major disciplines: economics, law, literature, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine and arts. It is affiliated with 12 hospitals across Shanghai and is widely renowned for its research strengths.

Location

SJTU has five campuses across Shanghai, including the original campus in the old French concession which retains some French architectural influences and the newer, main campus in Minhang, on the outskirts of the metropolis.

  • All courses from the School of Medicine and Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance are not available to university-level exchange students.
  • School of Computer Science and Technology, The number of vacancies for these courses is highly limited due to the current capacity issue. You must be able to take courses in Chinese, and you must achieve a grade of no less than 80 points in each course on your academic transcript.
  • The application for Antai College of Economics and Management is highly competitive, and applicants must have an academic background in economics and management-related disciplines.
  • Some schools, such as the School of International and Public Affairs/KoGuan Law School etc., do not offer undergraduate courses taught in English.If you choose these schools, you can select the English-taught graduate programs offered by the school.

Please note that units from the UM-SJTU Joint Institute are only available to exchange students who are nominated to the UM-SJTU Joint Institute. You cannot enrol in these units if you are nominated to another faculty in SJTU.

Language requirements

There are a limited number of units are available in English. If you wish to take units taught in Mandarin (other than Chinese as a second language units) at SJTU you will need to have a current HSK Language Test result of Level 5 or higher. Free Chinese language courses are also available at the beginner level.

* The KoGuan School of Law only offers English-taught units at a graduate level, which has a different credit equivalency. If you only have or want to complete 18 Monash credits on exchange to this school, you complete 6 SJTU credits but will only be enrolled in and charged for 18 credits at Monash. You must, however, successfully complete all 6 SJTU credits to be awarded the 18 credits on your return.

Accommodation

There are seven dormitory buildings for international students at Minhang and Xuhui Campuses.  Homestay and Zi Ru Department is also available near Minhang Campus, if you wish to experience a local lifestyle.  There is more information on the SJTU accommodation pages.

Visas

As a general rule, if you are a non-Chinese citizen you will require a visa to study in China. If studying for more than six months this is usually the ‘X1 visa’; for six months or less this is usually the ‘X2 visa’. All applications must be submitted through a Chinese Visa Application Service Centre after you receive an official acceptance letter from the host university. You will then need to apply for a residence permit.

Health and insurance

Additionally, the Chinese Department of Education requires all foreign students in China to purchase Foreign Student comprehensive insurance. The University will assist you with this.  SJTU also provides an insurance guide for international students.

When travelling on a Monash Abroad approved program, you are automatically covered under the Monash University Student Travel Insurance policy.  This will provide cover to and from your exchange.

Students taking Chinese language courses may be eligible for the Walter Mangold Study Abroad Scholarship.
