Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, Israel’s oldest university, is a public research university established in 1912, 35 years before the State of Israel. It is Israel’s biggest science and engineering teaching facility and acknowledged as being integral to the growth of Israel’s high tech industry.

Academic Highlights

Renowned for its research in the fields of biotechnology, space science, nanotechnology and stem cell research, Technion’s strengths also include architecture, medicine, computer science and education. Great emphasis is also placed on humanities and social science.

Location

The Technion campus, known as Technion City, is located on the pine-covered slopes of Mount Carmel in Haifa, Israel’s third-largest city.

Technion was the scene of Israel’s “battle of the languages”, a debate over what the instruction language should be. Hebrew was eventually chosen and this decision influenced the official language of the State of Israel 30 years later.

Visas

As a general rule, if formally accepted by the host institution into a program longer than three months, you will be required to obtain a multiple-entry A-2 student visa through an Israeli Embassy or Consulate prior to your arrival in Israel.

When travelling on a Monash Abroad approved program, you are automatically covered under the Monash University Student Travel Insurance policy. This will provide cover to and from your exchange.

Orientation and extra-curricular 

Technion has a vibrant student life for exchange students to take part in, as well as sportsocial activities, and Hebrew language courses (at an additional cost). There is also a buddy program for international students to pair up with a local Israeli buddy.

Cost of living

The Technion recommends that living expenses are approximately A$3,300 per semester (as at July 2021).
