Founded in Beijing in 1911, Tsinghua University is consistently ranked in China’s top handful of universities and admission is extremely competitive. A large comprehensive institution with approximately 30,000 students, it began embracing wider fields of study in the 1980s, including the sciences, economics, management, humanities, law, public policy and the arts and design. Despite this diversification, however, Tsinghua is still best known for its engineering.
Academic Highlights
A member of China’s elite C9 League, Tsinghua is particularly well-known for civil and structural engineering, architecture and materials sciences. Together with Fudan and Peking Universities it is considered one of the top three Chinese tertiary institutions.
Location
A large, prosperous district to the north-west of imperial Beijing, Haidian is the home of the famed Old Summer Palace. A university district, it is also the centre of Beijing’s IT industry.
