The University of Bologna, also known as UNIBO, is regarded as the oldest universities in the world, with a founding date in 1088. UNIBO was central in the development of mediaeval Roman law and has been both witness and participant to many historically significant movements such as the rise of medicine, the spread of modern languages and the Industrial Revolution.

UNIBO is Italy’s most international and popular university, with 85,000 students enrolled across its 11 Schools. It conducts wide-ranging research and offers a large number and variety of degree programs.
Location
The University has five campuses: Bologna, Cesena, Forlì, Ravenna and Rimini; each one home to different areas of expertise, plus an international campus in Buenos Aires.

Visas
As a general rule, all students must obtain a student visa from the Italian Consulate-General before leaving Australia. Within eight days of arriving in Italy you must also apply for a resident's permit; your host university will assist you.

Due to the popularity of this partner institution, for semester 1, 2026 onwards Monash students can only apply to study here on exchange for one semester.
Please note that any student wishing to study in Italian must have reached at least Intermediate level Italian at Monash.
