The University of East Anglia (UEA) is an internationally renowned UK university that provides top quality academic, social and cultural facilities to students across a range of disciplines. This uniquely-placed University is a leading member of Norwich Research Park, one of Europe's biggest concentrations of researchers in the fields of environment, health and plant science. UEA encourages a ‘thinking without borders’ approach to innovation in both teaching and research.
Academic Highlights
UEA has a long established reputation for innovation and brilliance across the Arts and Humanities. Situated in England’s first UNESCO City of Literature, UEA offers a vibrant and supportive environment with year-round literary events including UEA Live, the Noirwich Crime Writing Festival and the hugely successful International Literary Festival (with talks from Ian McEwan, Anne Enright and Nobel Prize winner Kazuo Ishiguro, all alumni of UEA).
Location
Situated in 320 acres of rolling parkland UEA is a mini-city campus located 15 minutes from the centre of Norwich. Established in 1963, architect Denys Lasdun wanted to create the perfect community environment with everything a student would need nearby. This vision is still evident today, where students will find world-class facilities on their doorstep, such as the University Sportspark which regularly hosts international sporting events and the world-famous Sainsbury Centre.
Did you know?
Visiting students will enjoy an active student campus, with UEA’s Study Abroad Office organising special Study Abroad focused events, alongside UEA’s Students’ Union varied and year round activities. Also managed by the Students’ Union, visiting students can choose from over 250 clubs and societies to join, ranging from a conservation society to a running club.
Norwich is Britain's most vegetarian and vegan-friendly city.

Visas
Non-UK or European Union citizens must have a valid student visa to undertake an exchange period. To apply, you will need a visa support letter - Confirmation of Acceptance - from the University. If studying for more than six months, then a Tier 4 (general) student visa will likely be required. If studying for less than six months, a short-term study visa may be the alternative. The short-term study visa is the simpler and cheaper option for entering the UK, however, it cannot be extended and no work can be undertaken (paid or unpaid) while in the UK.
If you are not a national of a majority English-speaking country you may also need to meet UK Border Agency language requirements. Be sure to check the requirements.
For more information on student visas, read the web pages of the UK Government's GOV.UK Visa and immigration web pages.
UEA also provide some important visa information.
Health and insurance
If you're studying in the UK for more than six months, you will likely be on a Tier 4 (general) student visa and so need to pay an Immigration Health Surcharge in order to access free health services under the National Health Service (NHS) once inside the UK. Students studying for less than six months are strongly recommended to have comprehensive health insurance.
When travelling on a Monash Abroad approved program, you are automatically covered under the Monash University Student Travel Insurance policy. This will provide cover to and from your exchange.
Orientation and extra-curricular
UEA provides an orientation program before the start of semester to help new international students settle in. There is also an international pre-departure guide for exchange students with additional information on preparing for your exchange.
Many events are organised throughout the semester, with an active student union offering a number of clubs and societies, and sporting facilities available for exchange students to use.
Cost of living
UEA provides financial information including the estimated cost of living in Norwich.
Funding

Study Experience
Meeting and being surrounded by so many amazing people made every moment at UEA enjoyable. I stayed in on-campus accommodation and it meant I met people and felt at home right from the start.
Culture
Norwich had so many things on offer. I spent many days in Norwich shopping, eating, seeing movies, and just wandering around with friends. Norwich also has great nightlife that is primarily for students so there was always something to see. I'm definitely going to be going back to Norwich as soon as I can!
Benefits of going on exchange
The units that I did at University of East Anglia all counted towards my major, but they also allowed me to gain different perspectives that I probably wouldn’t have received from doing my entire degree at Monash.
Career Benefits
Travelling to the other side of the world where I didn’t know anyone was intimidating but ended up being the most rewarding experience. It’s has given me more confidence and increased my ability to adapt and learn quickly. Going on exchange has encouraged me to want to travel as a part of my career.
Money and Budgeting
I saved up as much as possible in the year leading up to exchange by working a lot at a part-time job. My goal was to have enough saved up so that I could enjoy the experience without worrying about money or needing to work whilst on exchange.
