It has around 13,000 students and a highly international outlook, with 132 countries represented in its student body.
Academic Highlights
UoE is divided into the three faculties: the Humanities, the Social Sciences and Science and Health. It is particularly renowned for its achievements in the social sciences sphere. Alumni include Nobel Laureate for Economics, Professor Christopher Pissarides, internationally renowned architect, Daniel Liebskind, and film and television director, David Yates.

UoE is situated near Colchester, which is believed to be England's oldest town. Students enjoy a learning environment surrounded by 200 acres of beautiful parkland, just an hour outside London.

The Essex Business School building, opened in 2015, is believed to be the UK's first zero-carbon business school building. It has a winter garden giving the building its own micro-climate and a rainwater pond which recycles water to cool the building. The building includes a trading floor with Bloomberg terminals offering direct use of Bloomberg information.

Accommodation
UoE has a wide range of accommodation options including student residences and shared accommodation.
Visas
Non-UK or European Union citizens must have a valid student visa to undertake an exchange period. To apply, you will need a visa support letter - Confirmation of Acceptance - from the University. If studying for more than six months, then a Tier 4 (general) student visa will likely be required. If studying for less than six months, a short-term study visa may be the alternative. The short-term study visa is the simpler and cheaper option for entering the UK, however, it cannot be extended and no work can be undertaken (paid or unpaid) while in the UK.
If you are not a national of a majority English-speaking country you may also need to meet UK Border Agency language requirements. Be sure to check the requirements.
For more information on student visas, read the web pages of the UK Government's GOV.UK Visa and immigration web pages.
The University of Essex also provide some guidance on visas and immigration.
Health and insurance
If you're studying in the UK for more than six months, you will likely be on a Tier 4 (general) student visa and so need to pay an Immigration Health Surcharge in order to access free health services under the National Health Service (NHS) once inside the UK. Students studying for less than six months are strongly recommended to have comprehensive health insurance. UoE provides further information on insurance.
When travelling on a Monash Abroad approved program, you are automatically covered under the Monash University Student Travel Insurance policy. This will provide cover to and from your exchange.
Orientation and extra-curricular
UoE provides guidance for new students on what to expect from Essex, including an arrivals day, an orientation program, and ongoing support. There is information about life at Essex, which includes the student union, a range of campus activities and student support services, sports clubs and societies.
Cost of living
UoE estimates you will need £1,000 per month for living expenses. They provide further advice on the estimated cost of living for students.
Funding
For information about funding available to support study on exchange overseas, see the Financial Information page on the Monash Abroad website.
Important notes
Monash students are not permitted to study units in either the BFA drama and acting (Southend campus) or at the Edge Hotel School.
