A large public research university enjoying an internationally renowned reputation, the University of Exeter was founded in 1955 (although its history stretches back to the previous century) and it has grown into one of the UK’s most exciting tertiary institutions thanks to its dynamic approach to teaching and large-scale investment in facilities.
Academic Highlights
The University balances a strong focus in science, engineering, mathematics, and medicine research with an equally strong reputation in the humanities and social sciences. Recent years have seen significant expenditure on facilities create world-class homes for Biosciences, the Business School and the Environment and Sustainability Institute. It is also known for its investments in the arts. There are several galleries on campus, including the Bill Douglas Centre for the History of Cinema and Popular Culture.
Location
Located in Exeter, the capital of Devon in the south-west of England, the main campus is known for its beautiful landscaping and views. An historic cathedral town with a large student population and thriving arts scene, Exeter also boasts a great array of cafes, bars and restaurants, making it one of the liveliest locations in this green corner of England.

The University of Exeter has a sculpture walk that spans the campus grounds and includes pieces by Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth.

Accommodation
The University of Exeter offers self-catered student accommodation and private accommodation. You are guaranteed university-owned accommodation if you are studying for the full academic year and starting in September, or if you are studying for one semester at Penryn campus. Accommodation is not guaranteed, however, if you are studying for one semester at the Exeter campus. Generally, single semester accommodation is more readily available in Exeter's semester two than in semester one. Read the University's web pages about accommodation in Exeter.
Visas
Non-UK or European Union citizens must have a valid student visa to undertake an exchange period. To apply, you will need a visa support letter - Confirmation of Acceptance - from the University. If studying for more than six months, then a Tier 4 (general) student visa will likely be required. If studying for less than six months, a short-term study visa may be the alternative. The short-term study visa is the simpler and cheaper option for entering the UK, however, it cannot be extended and no work can be undertaken (paid or unpaid) while in the UK.
If you are not a national of a majority English-speaking country you may also need to meet UK Border Agency language requirements. Be sure to check the requirements.
For more information on student visas, read the web pages of the UK Government's GOV.UK Visa and immigration web pages.
The University of Exeter also provides some advice on applying for a visa.
Health and insurance
If you're studying in the UK for more than six months, you will likely be on a Tier 4 (general) student visa and so need to pay an Immigration Health Surcharge in order to access free health services under the National Health Service (NHS) once inside the UK. Students studying for less than six months are strongly recommended to have comprehensive health insurance.
When travelling on a Monash Abroad approved program, you are automatically covered under the Monash University Student Travel Insurance policy. This will provide cover to and from your exchange.
Orientation and extra-curricular
The University of Exeter runs a comprehensive orientation program before the semester for international students, as well as faculty-led information sessions. Attendance is compulsory. There is also information on how you can get involved in UK life as an exchange student, including over 250 student societies and sports groups, British family homestays, events and community groups.
Cost of living
Exeter advises that students will need approximately £1,015 a month, which include basic living expenses such as accommodation, food, books and equipment and other necessities. Read more about living costs in Exeter.
Funding
For information about funding available to support study on exchange overseas, see the Financial Information page on the Monash Abroad website.
