Academic Highlights
The University of Florence has a very broad educational offer with 126 degree courses organised in 10 schools. It has a student population of more than 50,000, around a quarter of whom come from outside the region.
Location
Located in the heart of Tuscany, Florence was the centre of medieval European trade and finance and one of the wealthiest cities of the time, as well as the birthplace of the Renaissance art movement. The city is rich in history and culture, with a vivacious culinary and arts scene.

Language requirements
- Most units are taught in Italian, with limited availability in English. If you wish to study in Italian, a CEFR certificate of level B2 or above is required. Italian language skills are tested upon arrival.
- Most Bachelor’s degree units are mainly in Italian. Certain postgraduate units are taught in English.

- Approval to study particular subjects at any institution is always at the discretion of the departmental/discipline and faculty advisers in your managing faculty(ies) and subject to available places at the host.
Accommodation
There is no on-campus accommodation but the International Office assists you in finding housing.

Visas
As a general rule, all students must obtain a student visa from the Italian Consulate-General before leaving Australia. Within eight days of arriving in Italy you must also apply for a resident's permit; your host university will assist you.

Florence also offers some guidance on obtaining a visa and residence permit for students from non-EU countries.
Health and insurance
During their stay at the University of Florence all foreign academic staff, researchers and students can take advantage of the insurance cover underwritten by the University. Students can also be covered by Italian National Health Care provided they pay the fee. Florence provides more further information on health and medical care.
When travelling on a Monash Abroad approved program, you are automatically covered under the Monash University Student Travel Insurance policy. This will provide cover to and from your exchange.
Orientation and extra-curricular
Florence has a vibrant university life for exchange students to enjoy.
Exchange students also have the opportunity to participate in Italian language courses and Italian culture courses.

Cost of living
For studies in Florence, a student can usually expect to spend a range of €600–€900 euros per month to cover living expenses, such as housing, food and transportation.

We will not be accepting applications for the University of Florence for Semester 1, 2026.
Please note that any student wishing to study in Italian must have reached at least Intermediate level Italian at Monash.
