University of Liverpool

University of Liverpool

Established in 1881, the University of Liverpool (UoL) has a reputation for innovation and internationalism. In 1994 the university was a founding member of the Russell Group, a UK collaboration of 20 leading research-intensive universities.

Academic Highlights

UoL is divided into three faculties: Health and Life Sciences; Humanities and Social Sciences; and Science and Engineering. It places great emphasis on state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities. It was the world's first university to establish departments in Oceanography, Civic Design, Architecture and Biochemistry.

Location

The University of Liverpool is an urban campus, occupying 100 acres just a five-minute walk from the city centre of Liverpool. The third-largest city in England, Liverpool has a vibrant cultural life, with the highest number of museums and galleries in the UK outside London.

Did you know?

UoL’s gothic-style Victoria Building inspired the term “redbrick university”, which refers to six British universities established in leading industrial English cities during the Victorian age. Opened in 1892, it has been restored as the Victoria Gallery and Museum.

Accommodation

Students staying in Liverpool for Semester 1 only can apply for a self-catered, single study bedroom in UoL’s Study Abroad Village.

Students staying for a full year or Semester 2 only will be guaranteed accommodation in University Residences.

UoL offers further advice on accommodation.

Visas

Non-UK or European Union citizens must have a valid student visa to undertake an exchange period.  To apply, you will need a visa support letter (Confirmation of Acceptance) from your host university.

If studying for more than six months, then a Tier 4 (general) student visa may be required.

If going for less than six months, a Tier 4 (general) student visa or a short-term study visa may be required. The short-term study visa is the simpler and cheaper option for entering the UK however the visa cannot be extended and no work can be undertaken (paid or unpaid) while in the UK.

If you are not a national of a majority English-speaking country you may need to meet UK Border Agency language requirements. Be sure to check the requirements.

For more information on student visas, please refer to the British Consulate-General here.

UoL also offers advice on visas.

Health and insurance

Tier 4 General Student visa applicants are required to pay an immigration health charge (IHS) at the point of submitting their visa application. The charge will entitle the visa holder to free health services under the National Health Service (NHS) once inside the UK. Find out more about health services with the Tier 4 visa here. Those who are applying for a short-term visa will need to arrange their own health cover.

When travelling on a Monash Abroad approved program, you are automatically covered under the Monash University Student Travel Insurance policy.  This will provide cover to and from your exchange.

Orientation and extra-curricular

A range of orientation sessions and activities are held specifically for international students.

UoL has a vibrant university life for exchange students, including a student union, sporting clubs and outdoor activities, as well as many things to see and do in the city of Liverpool.

UoL's Study Abroad Team also organise a buddy scheme to help students to settle in to the exchange programme.

Cost of living

UoL provides guidance on estimated living costs for students.
