University of Miami

University of Miami

The University of Miami (UM) was established in 1925 and has more than 17,000 students enrolled across eleven schools and colleges. As a gateway to Central America, South America, and the Caribbean, UM is one of the most culturally diverse institutions in the United States.

Academic highlights

Established in 1925 during the region's famous real estate boom, UM is a major research university engaged in $324 million in research and sponsored program expenditures annually. While the majority of this work is housed at the Miller School of Medicine, investigators conduct hundreds of studies in other areas, including marine science, engineering, education, and psychology.

Location

UM’s main campus is at Coral Gables, a multicultural city south of Miami on Biscayne Bay. The campus occupies more than 100 hectares and is home to the Lowe Art Museum, the Jerry Herman Ring Theatre and the Gusman Concert Hall and Clarke Recital Hall.

Accommodation

On-campus housing is not guaranteed and is only available to students who come to Miami through an undergraduate exchange. Exchange students have the opportunity to apply for on-campus housing or may choose to live off-campus. Graduate students must make arrangements to live off campus.  The University provides information on accommodation on their Housing & Residential Life website.

Visas

As a general rule, a student visa is required to study in the US.  You will be sent the necessary information by Miami once you have been accepted.  See pages 11-14 of the Exchange Student Handbook for further information.  To obtain a visa you will need to do so through the US Consulate General in Melbourne.

Health and insurance

When travelling on a Monash Abroad approved program, however, you are automatically covered under the Monash University Student Travel Insurance policy. Miami automatically enrols international students in the local student health insurance plan.  Waivers are not permitted, regardless of existing insurance coverage.  See the

All new students are required to provide proof of immunisation against measles (Rubella), mumps, tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis. They also must provide proof of immunisation against hepatitis B and meningococcal meningitis or sign a waiver declining these immunisations.

See page 19 of the Exchange Student Handbook for further information about these matters.

Orientation and extra-curricular

Exchange students participate in orientation with the larger student body at Miami (not the international orientation) but the Study Abroad Office hosts a mandatory orientation session specifically for exchange students.
