University of Missouri

University of Missouri

The University of Missouri (MU or "Mizzou") was founded in 1839, the first public university west of the Mississippi River. More than 33,000 students are enrolled in 300 degree programs across 18 colleges. A member of the Association of American Universities, it’s also home to the oldest school of journalism in the US and operates four hospitals.

Academic highlights

Mizzou is highly regarded for its medical, law, journalism and veterinary schools but is also renowned for strengths in creative writing and music composition. Its commitment to “real world” education has students experiencing everything from managing shops and preparing income tax for families through to representing victims of domestic violence in court.

Location

Mizzou’s main campus is located on over 500 hectares of botanical garden in the city of Columbia, about two hours east of Kansas City in central Missouri. The garden is home to more than 42,000 plants, many arranged in thematic collections. Mizzou’s Columbia campus is split into two ‘campuses’: the Red, which houses most of the historical (red) brick academic buildings, and the White that has newer buildings, constructed from native Missouri limestone.

Did you know?

Mizzou has one of the oldest and largest homecoming celebrations in the US. "Homecoming" is essentially a football game that occurs between the Missouri Tigers and a rival football team with university alumni invited to "come home" to support their team. The homecoming celebration also features festivities such as a parade and spirit rally.

MU require all exchange students to have health insurance and ask that you purchase theirs.  You can seek a waiver if you have insurance which meets their requirements.  Further information will be provided when you are accepted.

MU requires students to provide evidence of having had certain immunisations before the first day of classes.
