Founded in 1881 and gaining university status in 1948, the University of Nottingham is consistently ranked among the top 100 universities around the globe. A public research university, it hosts around 44,000 students and is noted for its emphasis on internationalisation and entrepreneurship.
Academic Highlights
A research-led institution, the University of Nottingham has numerous schools and departments located within its main Faculties of Arts, Engineering, Medical and Health Sciences, Science and Social Science. It has produced a number of Nobel Prize winners and was the alma mater of writer DH Lawrence.
Location
The main university campus, University Park Campus, is located just outside of Nottingham, a lively student town approximately two hours from London by train. It occupies 330 acres of picturesque parkland and lakes and has won awards for its innovative green ethos. Smaller campuses are located in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.

Academic Restrictions
- Units offered by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (including Medicine, Nursing and Physiotherapy) are not available to exchange students.
- Business units may be limited due to demand from local Nottingham students.
- English units are limited to Level 1 modules only (Level 2 or 3 English modules are not available to Monash students).
- The Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering is not open to exchange students.
Study Plan Requirements
The following list of schools and departments only accept an application from students commencing in the Autumn semester (Monash Semester 2). This means that students cannot study units from the following schools if their exchange commences in Monash's Semester 1:
- Department of Architecture and Built Environment (a portfolio is required at time of applicaiton)
- Nottingham University Business School
- School of Chemistry
- Department of Culture, Media and Visual Studies
- School of English
- School of Physics
- School of Politics and International Relations
Nottingham modules (units) are typically worth 10-20 credits each.

Eligibility
Places are limited and applications will be assessed on a competitive basis. To apply for this program, you must have:
- a WAM of 70% or above
- completed at least 48 credit points
- submitted a 500-word personal statement as part of your application.
Please also be aware that you must have completed the following gateway units: ATS1089 Fundamentals of Journalism and/or ATS1090 Practice of Journalism

Step 2: Course Progression and Study Plan Check
After the application deadline, your faculty/ies will do a course progression check to see if this unit fits into your course.
Step 3: Enrolment
If you are accepted into the program, your faculty/ies will enrol you into the associated unit and update your application status to 'Enrolled by Faculty(ies)/School(s)'; this will be confirmed in an email to your student account. You will then have access to the travel insurance documentation via your MAP application.
Important note: you must have a valid passport that does not expire until at least six months after the program end date.

- Approval to study particular subjects at any institution is always at the discretion of the departmental/discipline and faculty advisers in your managing faculty(ies) and subject to available places at the host.
Accommodation
On-campus accommodation at Nottingham is guaranteed for all exchange students, on the condition that application deadlines are met. You can opt for catered or self-catered halls.
The accommodation office can also help you arrange a private rental. If you may wish to rent privately in Nottingham, the accommodation office can help you find suitable options.

Visas
Non-UK or European Union citizens must have a valid student visa to undertake an exchange period. To apply, you will need a visa support letter (Confirmation of Acceptance) from your host university.
If studying for more than six months, then a Tier 4 (general) student visa may be required.
If going for less than six months, a Tier 4 (general) student visa or a short-term study visa may be required. The short-term study visa is the simpler and cheaper option for entering the UK however the visa cannot be extended and no work can be undertaken (paid or unpaid) while in the UK.
If you are not a national of a majority English-speaking country you may need to meet UK Border Agency language requirements. Be sure to check the requirements.

Health and insurance
Tier 4 General Student visa applicants are required to pay an immigration health charge (IHS) at the point of submitting their visa application. The charge will entitle the visa holder to free health services under the National Health Service (NHS) once inside the UK. Find out more about health services with the Tier 4 visa here. Those who are applying for a short-term visa will need to arrange their own health cover.
Nottingham provides some information on health insurance for international students.
When travelling on a Monash Abroad approved program, you are automatically covered under the Monash University Student Travel Insurance policy. This will provide cover to and from your exchange.
Orientation and extra-curricular
The University runs a comprehensive Welcome Program for incoming international students before the beginning of the Autumn semester.
Nottingham has a vibrant campus life, with an active student union, student networks and groups, sport clubs and facilities and student societies.
Cost of living
Nottingham recommend a minimum of £1,015 per month to cover basic living expenses. Nottingham some advice on cost of living here.
As part of visa requirements, if you are a non-EEA student you must ensure that you have sufficient funds for fees and maintenance for your whole period of study.
