University of Padua

University of Padua

The University of Padua, in Italian Università degli Studi di Padova or UniPd, is an Italian university located in the northern Italian city of Padua in the region of Veneto. The University was founded in 1222 by a group of students and teachers from Bologna, making it the second-oldest university in Italy and the world's fifth-oldest surviving university.

In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries it became one of the two or three leading universities of Europe. Among its professors were famous Renaissance philosophers, humanists, and scientists, including Galileo. The University’s botanical garden, founded in 1545, is the oldest in Europe. Its astronomical observatory was founded in 1761.

Today the University is regularly ranked as one of the best in Italy amongst the top 50 in Europe.

Academic Highlights

Modern faculties include law, political science, arts and literature, philosophy, education, mathematics, physics and natural sciences, economics and commerce, statistics, pharmacy, agriculture, engineering, and medicine.

Location

The University has no central campus but its headquarters, the Palazzo del Bo, are located in the centre of the city, not far from the central railway station. Different parts of the University are spread around the city and in the nearby countryside with the experimental farm and verterinary school.

Did you know?

The first woman in the world to receive an academic degree from a university, and the first to receive a Doctor of Philosophy degree, was Elena Lucrezia Cornaro Piscopia, also known in English as Helen Cornaro, a Venetian of noble descent who was awarded the degree in 1678 by the University of Padua.

General Information

Our colleagues from Padua have kindly shared an overview of the location and the University in this online presentation.

Accommodation

On-campus accommodation support is provided by ESU Padova (ESU di Padova, Regional Agency for the Right to Study).  Due to the limited number of places, preference for accommodation in ESU university residences is given to non-European students in order to make it easier for them to apply for a study visa.  There is more information on the University Housing web page.

As an alternative to on-campus accommodation, students can search for private rooms/apartments on HousingAnywhere, an international housing platform through which they can book a room/apartment offered by verified private landlords and by outgoing students. To receive a Unipd VIP profile and priority access use this link to the HousingAnywhere site.

Visas

As a general rule, all students must obtain a student visa from the Italian Consulate-General before leaving Australia. Within eight days of arriving in Italy you must also apply for a resident's permit; your host institution will assist you.

Monash Abroad can only provide general information, always check with the relevant consular/Embassy and consider advice that is right for you.

For more information on visas, please refer to the website of the Consulate-General of Italy.

Unipd also provide some advice on visas, which can be found on their Before your arrival page.

Health and insurance

When travelling on a Monash Abroad approved program, you are automatically covered under the Monash University Student Travel Insurance policy.

Orientation and extra-curricular

The University holds Welcome Days each semester where exchange students are introduced to the University and the city of Padua and provided with all the information needed to ensure a good stay at UniPD.

The Tutoring Office in cooperation with the International Relations Division provides a Buddy Service to support exchange students. All Buddies are students of the University of Padua. The task of a Buddy is to welcome exchange students and be a friendly local contact throughout their stay.  You will be assigned one automatically.

The Language Centre, CLA – Centro linguistico di Ateneo, runs Italian language courses for exchange students.
