The University of Surrey was established in 1966 but its roots go back to the nineteenth century and a concern to help educate the working poor. A well regarded public university, it has around 14,000 students and a highly international campus.
Academic Highlights
The University of Surrey specialises in science, engineering, medicine and business. One of its most important developments was the opening of the Surrey Research Park in 1985, which currently accommodates more than 100 companies engaged in research and development activities, many of which relate closely to the work of the University's own faculties.
Location
The University of Surrey's picturesque main campus is located on Stag Hill, close to the centre of Guildford, a county just south west of London. A second campus, at Manor Park, is located a short distance away. Guildford is an affluent English town just over half an hour from London by train.
Did you know?
Led Zeppelin were among the very first visitors to the campus and performed their very first gig at the university in 1968.

Handbook/Catalogue
Surrey's programme/module catalogue (please note that a programme is a degree, and a module is a unit. You can find units to study by looking through the modules individually, or by finding them through a degree programme).
Academic Restrictions
- Exchange students must undertake full-time study at Surrey, which is normally 4 modules per semester. Modules are typically worth 15 Surrey credits each.
- Engineering timetables are complex due to the laboratory sessions, so students are advised, if possible, to select modules from just one engineering specisalisation to avoid timetable clashes.
- Health and Medical Sciences timetables are complex, so students are advised to pick modules from one programme and year level to avoid clashes.
- Global Graduate Award languages modules are only available to students coming for the full academic year and cannot be taken as one of your 4 modules for the semester.
- As the ‘MAN’ module code is used by two separate departments (Business and Hospitality & Tourism), please make sure you only choose modules from your own department by selecting from the ‘View Modules by Department and Level’ section of the catalogue.
- Students can take elective modules (outside your main subject area) - normally 1st year modules - but these will be subject to timetabling restrictions and students must provide alternative choices.
- Students wishing to take 2nd or 3rd year modules are required to have a strong background (at least a full year of equivalent units) in that discipline area.
Please note, the following programs/departments are not available to exchange students:
- Liberal Arts degree modules – codes starting LAS
- Short, intensive Masters-level professional development units (eg. PHMM..., PHAM…)
- Nursing and Midwifery
- Guildford School of Acting (GSA)
- Digital Media Arts

Accommodation
Various types of on-campus accommodation are available, but cannot be guaranteed.
The University of Surrey offers further advice on accommodation.
Visas
Non-UK or European Union citizens must have a valid student visa to undertake an exchange period. To apply, you will need a visa support letter (Confirmation of Acceptance) from your host university.
If studying for more than six months, then a Tier 4 (general) student visa may be required.
If going for less than six months, a Tier 4 (general) student visa or a short-term study visa may be required. The short-term study visa is the simpler and cheaper option for entering the UK however the visa cannot be extended and no work can be undertaken (paid or unpaid) while in the UK.
If you are not a national of a majority English-speaking country you may need to meet UK Border Agency language requirements. Be sure to check the requirements.
For more information on student visas, please refer to the British Consulate-General here.
The University of Surrey also provides some advice on immigration and visas.
Health and insurance
Tier 4 General Student visa applicants are required to pay an immigration health charge (IHS) at the point of submitting their visa application. The charge will entitle the visa holder to free health services under the National Health Service (NHS) once inside the UK. Find out more about health services with the Tier 4 visa here. Those who are applying for a short-term visa will need to arrange their own health cover.
The University of Surrey offers additional information on health care and insurance.
When travelling on a Monash Abroad approved program, you are automatically covered under the Monash University Student Travel Insurance policy. This will provide cover to and from your exchange.
Orientation and extra-curricular
The University of Surrey organises an compulsory two-day orientation program for exchange students before semester commences. Following this, there is a Welcome Week which is designed to help all new students settle in and receive information about life at Surrey. There is also a local buddy scheme which new exchange students can register to join.
The University of Surrey has a vibrant student life, with an active student union organising activities, many sports and societies, arts and culture, and sport and fitness facilities.
Cost of living
As part of visa requirements, if you are a non-EEA student you must ensure that you have sufficient funds for fees and maintenance during your whole period of study. The University of Surrey estimates that you will need at least GB£250 per week to cover your general living expenses, including rent.
The University of Surrey offers further guidance on the cost of living and money matters.
