The University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin) is one of the largest public universities in the United States and is the oldest institution of the University of Texas System. Founded in 1883, the University has grown from a single building, with eight teachers, two departments and 221 students to a 423.5-acre main campus with 18 colleges and schools, about 3,000 teaching staff, and more than 52,000 students. The University’s reach goes far beyond the borders of the main campus with satellite campuses and research centres across Texas, including the J.J. Pickle Research Campus, the Marine Science Institute, the McDonald Observatory, the Montopolis Research Center and the Brackenridge tract.
Academic Highlights
UT Austin is one of the top ten public universities with the number one accounting, Latin American history and petroleum engineering graduate programs in the country, plus more than 15 undergraduate programs and 40 graduate programs ranked in the top ten nationally. Its alumni include winners of the Nobel Prize, the Pulitzer Prize, the National Medal of Science, the National Medal of Technology, the Turing Award, the Primetime Emmy Award, and other various awards. Nine Nobel Laureates are or have been affiliated with UT Austin.

UT Austin is located in Austin, Texas. The University's property totals 1,438.5 acres, comprising 423.5 acres for the main campus in central Austin. It has 150 buildings totalling over 18,000,000 square feet.

Accommodation
On-campus housing is available for exchange students, but is not guaranteed. Start searching for housing as soon as possible after admission. Visas
As a general rule, a student visa is required to study in the US. You will be sent the necessary information by UT Austin once you have been accepted. To obtain a visa you will need to do so through the US Consulate General in Melbourne.

Health and insurance
Health insurance is mandatory for all international students. UT Austin provides further information on the Student Health Insurance Plan for exchange students.
When travelling on a Monash Abroad approved program, you are automatically covered under the Monash University Student Travel Insurance policy. This will provide cover to and from your exchange.
Orientation and extra-curricular
International Student Orientation for incoming exchange students is offered at the beginning of each semester, one to two weeks prior to the start of classes.
UT Austin is an immense and beautiful world all its own. With student clubs and organisations, fitness facilities, student support services, university athletics games to attend and dozens of museums, libraries, centres, institutes and special venues spread across the campus and the city, each with its own unique exhibits and programming, you'll never be bored.
Cost of living
UT Austin offers some guidance on the cost of attendance for students. Please note you can ignore the calculation of tuition fees as you will be an exchange student. Tuition fees will be paid to Monash or via HECS.

Studies in McCombs School of Business and Law at UT Austin are excluded from the exchange agreement.
Due to the popularity of this partner institution, for semester 1, 2026 onwards Monash students can only apply to study here on exchange for one semester.
