Academic Highlights
The University is the birthplace of an influential school of thought on communication theory and literary criticism known as the Toronto School. Academic Options and Restrictions (UoT provides a course enrolment guide to help students select suitable courses)
For the course syllabus or outline, Toronto has advised to contact the departments or course instructors directly to inquire if syllabi for courses are available.
We are required to send an even spread of students across all three campuses. St George is the most popular campus choice, so students who have the option of studying at either the Missisauga or Scarborough campuses will have a much higher chance of success.
- The Faculty of Law at Toronto is currently not open to Monash students. There are a number of Law-related units available in the College of Arts and Sciences that Monash Law students could choose from as alternatives.
- Biomedical Sciences is currently not open to Monash students.
- Rotman Commerce is a restricted program and not open to Monash students. Business/Commerce/Management students will need to go to Mississauga or Scarborough campuses.

Accommodation
There are different accommodation options depending on which UoT campus exchange students attend. Read the housing information for exchange students on the Toronto website.
Visas
As a general rule, Australian citizens do not need a study permit if they plan to participate in a university exchange program in Canada that lasts no more than six months. Every Australian citizen entering Canada for less than six months, however, will still require an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) which can be purchased online. For more information on visas, please refer to the website of the High Commission of Canada in Australia.
UoT provides advice on immigration.
Health and insurance
The University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) is a mandatory health insurance plan for all international and exchange students enrolled in an Ontario university. UHIP helps to cover the cost of hospital and medical services you may need to maintain your health while in Canada. You are automatically enrolled in UHIP, and the coverage charge will be listed on your student account.
UoT provides further information on UHIP.
When travelling on a Monash Abroad approved program, you are automatically covered under the Monash University Student Travel Insurance policy. This will provide cover to and from your exchange.
Orientation and extra-curricular
Orientation takes place in the week or two leading up to the start of classes in early September. If you arrive in January you will find some orientation activities taking place, but on a smaller scale.
UoT has a vibrant campus and student life, with over 800 student clubs and organisations, sports and recreation, and student unions at each campus.
Cost of living
UoT estimates that the cost of living per month is around C$1,800 at the St George campus, C$1,600 at the Mississauga campus, and C$1,200 at the Scarborough campus. UoT offers more details on the living costs web page.
Funding
For information about funding available to support study on exchange overseas, see the Financial Information page on the Monash Abroad website.
