The University of Western Ontario, commonly known as Western, is a publicly funded research university located in London, Ontario. Founded in 1878, it has grown into one of Canada’s leading universities with Nobel Prize winning alumi and a renowned science program.
Academic Highlights
Western focuses on four main fields of study and research: life sciences and the human condition, the human and physical environments and social trends, culture analysis and values, public policy, and economic activity. The University is divided into 12 faculties and schools and has around 36,000 students.
Location
Considered Canada’s most beautiful campus, Western’s 1,200 acres are decorated with a mixture of historic ivy-covered neo-gothic edifices and sleek, modern buildings. The Ontario town of London, 200 kilometres west of Toronto, is known as “the Forest City” thanks to its many parks and walking trails but it also has a lively student atmosphere.

Visas
As a general rule, Australian citizens do not need a study permit if they plan to participate in a university exchange program in Canada that lasts no more than six months. Every Australian citizen entering Canada for less than six months, however, will still require an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) which can be purchased online. For more information on visas, please refer to the website of the High Commission of Canada in Australia.
Western University also provide some advice on visas and permits.
Health and insurance
It is mandatory to purchase Canadian provincial medical insurance, known as UHIP, through Western University’s selected program.
When travelling on a Monash Abroad approved program, you are automatically covered under the Monash University Student Travel Insurance policy. This will provide cover to and from your exchange.
Orientation and extra-curricular
Information on orientation and other useful topics including mandatory fees can be found at Western's page for Incoming Exchange Students.
Cost of living
Western provides financial information on their Exchange Program Fact Sheet, a downloadable PDF on the Incoming Exchange Students website.
Funding
For information about funding available to support study on exchange overseas, see the Financial Information page on the Monash Abroad website.
Important notes
The University of Western Ontario only accepts exchange applications once a year for both semesters of the following Canadian academic year, which means you must apply to Monash Abroad by the October deadline for the following year's second (Fall) semester and/or the first (Winter) semester.
For example, if you want to go on exchange in Monash semester one (the Western winter semester), you will need to apply three semesters prior to your intended start date.
