The University of Wisconsin-Madison was founded in 1848, the same time as the state of Wisconsin. It is the oldest and largest public university in the state, with over 40,000 students enrolled across 20 associated colleges and schools. It is part of the Public Ivy group of schools and a member of the Big Ten Academic Alliance.


Academic Highlights

UW is consistently ranked in the world’s top 100 universities and is renowned for work across a wide range of disciplines, including geography, history, chemical engineering, agriculture and forestry, communications and media studies and sociology. Its pioneering achievements include the discovery of vitamins in the early 20th century, the cultivation of embryonic stem cells and, in 2010, the discovery of a new human species.

Location

UW is located in downtown Madison, the state capital of Wisconsin. The 378-hectare main campus sits on an isthmus between Lakes Mendota and Monona. The entire campus, including research stations spread across the state is 4,290 hectares.

Monash students cannot enrol in the School of Journalism or the School of Law (but they can take units in the Legal Studies Program of the College of Letters and Sciences). Enrolment is heavily restricted in the Schools of Business, Music and Education and in the Department of Economics.

Accommodation

Housing, on-campus accommodation may be an option but depends on the number of available places with returning student to the residence halls.

Visas

As a general rule, a student visa is required to study in the US. UW-M will send a letter of acceptance that will enable you to obtain a visa at the US Consulate General in Melbourne.

Health and insurance

All exchange applicants are required to purchase the UW-M Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP).  When travelling on a Monash Abroad approved program, however, you are automatically covered under the Monash University Student Travel Insurance policy. This will cover you before and after your exchange travelling to and from UW-M.

Orientation and extra-curricular 

Orientation is compulsory at UW-M and takes place a few days before teaching begins. The University and the city also has alot of other things to do when not studying.

The University provides an estimate of the cost of attendance in the course of a year.
