Uppsala University

Founded in 1477, Uppsala University (UU) is the oldest university in Scandinavia and one of the most prominent. It remains an important part of historical and cultural life in Sweden and actively cultivates a vibrant international community of students and researchers.

Sweden’s fourth-largest city, Uppsala has a vibrant student culture, with five other higher learning institutions located within the city. UU sits in the heart of Uppsala city, on the west bank of the Fyris River, which also contains most of Uppsala’s historically significant buildings, such as Domkyrka, Scandinavia's largest church. Gotland campus is located in Visby on the island of Gotland, in the Baltic Sea.

Accommodation

UU has no on-campus accommodation, however the UU Housing Office administers rooms operated by different housing companies.  Accommodation is usually offered if you apply on time but is not guaranteed.

Visas

All exchange students going to Sweden must obtain a Student Residence Permit.  Once you have been accepted by Lund, you apply for the Permit to the Swedish Migration Agency. Citizens of some countries require a visa to enter Sweden as well as a residence permit.  Once your visa and/or permit have been granted, you visit the local embassy or consulate to have your picture and your fingerprints taken.

Uppsala also provides some advice on obtaining a visa and residence permit.

Health and insurance

The Swedish government has designed insurance for foreign students coming to Sweden within an exchange agreement, "Student IN".  Uppsala has more information on medical insurance for exchanges students.

When travelling on a Monash Abroad approved program, you are automatically covered under the Monash University Student Travel Insurance policy.  This will provide cover to and from your exchange.

Orientation and extra-curricular

Uppsala organises arrival days, receptions, information sessions, guided tours and orientation activities for new students as part of its Welcome Programme.  In addition exchange students are encouraged to explore the many cultural offerings and events on offer.  There is a vibrant student life with six student unions, 13 student nations and many student organisations. There are also health and fitness facilities available to exchanges students.

All exchange students have the opportunity to take a course in basic Swedish for free. The course is worth 7.5 ECTS and runs every semester.

Cost of living

Residence visa conditions in Sweden require from 1 January 2019 that you to have a budget of at least SEK 8,370 (c. A$1,265) per month during your exchange.  Study in Sweden offers guidance on the average cost of living for students.

Funding

For information about funding available to support study on exchange overseas, see the Financial Information page on the Monash Abroad website.
