Waseda University is a private, independent university in the heart of Tokyo with more than 50,000 students. Established in 1882, it is known as a leader in collegiate sports and as having produced seven Japanese prime ministers and world-renowned author Haruki Murakami. It offers 50 all-English degree programs.
Academic highlights
Waseda has an impressive reputation across a comprehensive range of disciplines. Its strengths lie in maths, chemistry, physics and engineering and its law, humanities and sports science schools are equally renowned.
Location
The main campus of Waseda is located in Shinjuku, central Tokyo. It was built in 1949, after the original 1882 campus was mostly destroyed during the firebombing of Tokyo during World War Two.

Academic Restrictions
- Students applying for an exchange in Japan will need to have a WAM of 65% or above.
- You are only eligible to apply for this university if you are studying Japanese Studies at Monash at the point of exchange application. The only exception is if a student has been selected as a New Colombo Plan Scholar.
- Due to the popularity of exchange at Waseda, Monash students can only apply for a one-semester exchange period.

Accommodation
Waseda University provide limited on-campus accommodation options, with domitories of different sizes. Visit their Exchange Students website for more information on housing options.
Visas
Exchange students must obtain a College Student visa to enter Japan. To apply for the College Student visa, you need to submit the Certificate of Eligibility (COE) for residence in Japan to your nearest Japanese Consulate. Your host University will issue the COE to you after your exchange application has been accepted.

Health and insurance
When travelling on a Monash Abroad approved program, you are automatically covered under the Monash University Student Travel Insurance policy. This will provide cover to and from your exchange.
