Global Study Tours

Would you like to study for one to four weeks in another country or countries, with a Monash academic and a group of fellow like-minded Monash students?

A Global Study Tour might be for you.

You can follow the steps below for an overview of the Global Study Tour experience, and a step-by-step support with preparing your application.

Global Study Tour application dates

While application dates vary from program to program, generally applications for Global Study Tours departing in the winter semester open in early semester one, while applications for Global Study Tours departing in the summer semester open in early semester two.

How does it work?

  • Global study tours are short in duration (usually one to four weeks), and typically run during the semester breaks.
  • Global Study Tours are generally led by a Monash academic and will allow you to travel and study alongside a small group of like-minded fellow Monash students, and complete a Monash University unit in another country or countries through field-based experiences.
  • The leading academics plan and run the programs so you don’t need to find your own accommodation or organise in-country logistics. Depending on the tour, you may need to source your own flights.
  • For many Global Study Tours, you will be required to complete in-country assessments, such as group presentations, reflections or quizzes. These will be built into the program schedule and you will have access to the academic for support and guidance throughout the program.

When can I apply?

Global Study Tours are published each year in the Handbook and on the Monash Abroad program search.

Generally, the key application timeline for Global Study Tours is as follows:

Travel periodPromotion and recruitment timeframe
Winter (June to July)Faculties will usually promote winter programs at the end of the previous calendar year and recruit early in Semester 1.
Summer A & B (Nov - Feb)Faculties will usually promote and recruit for Summer programs in June-August of each year.

After your application has been submitted and the deadline has passed, it will be assessed by your faculty/ies or school/s. It usually takes about two weeks post deadline for outcomes to be issued, but may take longer in some instances.

Below are the next steps to expect following your application submission.

Step one: Receive an outcome on your application from Monash Abroad

Keep an eye on your emails after submitting, as this is how we will communicate with you about the status of your application.

  • Accept your offer

As part of your offer acceptance, you will need to pay a deposit for your Global Study Tour overall cost to confirm your place before the deadline. Further information on program costs can be found in the program brochure.

  • Book your flights and accommodation

Details and instructions for booking your flights and accommodation will be sent to you by your academic study tour leader following your offer acceptance.

Share your feedback with us

Following your program, we will be inviting you to complete a survey asking you about your experience. This is completely optional, however we really value your feedback and will use it to help us in planning for future exchange rounds.

Re-adjusting to life back home

After you return home, you might be having mixed emotions – excited to see friends and family, but feeling sad that your overseas experience has come to an end. This is a completely normal part of the readjustment process.

Reverse culture shock can last longer than the culture shock you experienced while you are away. After all, you were overseas for a relatively short while and your experiences abroad will shape the person you become for years to come. So allow yourself time to get used to being back home and to process the experience you have just had.

This resource defines reverse culture shock, which involves the initial excitement of being home followed by difficulties adjusting back into your home culture, and strategies for managing it after you return home.

You may not experience reverse culture shock in the same way as other returned students, but it is important to know that you aren't the only one having mixed feelings about being home.

You might consider joining one of the many cultural clubs at Monash to keep your overseas experience alive.

Applying your overseas study experience to your employability skills

Having an overseas experience on your resume can be a great help in securing a job or internship. Monash Career Connect have created an employability skills (PDF, 0.22 MB) worksheet that will help you include your experience in CVs and cover letters.
