Founded in 2014, Ashoka University has already established itself as one of India’s top tertiary institutions. A private not-for-profit university, it has brought high-profile academics from around the world to teach in India, and its donation-based establishment constitutes the largest philanthropy project in Indian history.
Academic Highlights
Ashoka University has a strong focus on the humanities and social sciences. Part of Ashoka’s founding was to provide world class, so-called, liberal arts education in a country that was dominated by sciences and engineering.

Ashoka University is located just outside of New Delhi in Sonipat, a planned city and educational hub.

Ashoka University was named after the emperor Ashoka the Great, who ruled the Mauryan Empire, covering parts of what is now Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan, from 268 to 232 BCE, and was instrumental in spreading Buddhism across Asia.

Accommodation
All international visiting students are guaranteed on-campus accommodation in fully-furnished residence halls with laundry service. Rooms are on a double-occupancy basis, and exchange students are paired with local Ashoka students to encourage intercultural exchange. Single room accommodation is not available. Students receive a meal plan (buffet and combo meals) at the dining facilities of Ashoka. The campus has additional food outlets, where students can purchase the same at their own expense.
Visas
As a general rule, a student visa is required to study in India. Information about Indian visas can be found here.
Ashoka University provides a visa support letter to incoming international students.
Health and insurance
When travelling on a Monash Abroad approved program, you are automatically covered under the Monash University Student Travel Insurance policy. This will provide cover to and from your exchange.
Orientation and extra-curricular
In addition to academic courses, Ashoka University’s study abroad office organises several opportunities for students to meet and interact in fora beyond the classroom. These take the form of social, cultural, and sports activities.
Some of the prominent activities include bike rides, movie nights, water polo, Delhi cultural tours.
Ashoka also has more than 50 student-run clubs and societies, catering to a wide range of interests and hobbies.

Funding
Students participating in semester exchanges to India will be eligible to receive NCP Mobility Grant funding of up to $7000. Eligible students are automatically assessed by Monash Abroad, and are not required to submit a separate application. See here for more information.
